Match report Waltham Draw A Blanc

Crows were licking their lips at the prospect of first use of the white shirt front on this immaculate village green. David K strode onto the pitch with his opening partner Jules to celebrate the first anniversary of our club's highest individual batsman's score. However, much like 12 months before the bowling side had the best of the early exchanges as David's front pad appeared to be hard-wired to his umpiring father's index finger. David S threatened to continue the previous week's form before quickly holing out in the covers and he was soon followed back to the hutch by Outram, Nicking off to the keeper second ball. Dan Manning barely worked up an appetite before leaving the Crows in trouble at 70-odd for 4. At the other end, Jules was also clinging on by his finger-nails with the fielding side grassing no fewer than four chances to oust the Crows' skipper but then he was joined at the crease by Freddie and the game slowly began to turn. The pair dug in, started rotating the strike, began to put away the increasing number of bad balls and before long fielders were scattered to all four corners of the Walthams. Freddie was now leading the charge and created a nightmare on Waltham Rd and had multi-millionaire homeowners urgently picking up the phones to their landscape gardeners. Jules capped off his gritty, hard-fought ton an over before Freddie joined him on three-figures and in a well-earned golden retirement following a magnificent partnership of nearly 200 runs. Crows plundered a few more demoralising runs in the final few overs to set a formidable target of 318.

The second innings was far from a formality - the previous year's fixture had seen the home side successfully chase down over 250 runs in this batting paradise. There seemed to be a whiff of complacency as Crows took to the field with just 10 men but a glance over the road to the The Beehive revealed it to be the aroma of Dan Manning's burger and chips, as he enjoyed an all too leisurely tea break. A good opening bowling partnership between Dylan and Nick confirmed suspicions that the punchy required rate might not necessarily be an obstacle to the home side, despite an early breakthrough by Outram with a swinging yorker. Rohan came on first change a immediately stemmed the flow of runs with some wily tweakers, then the agricultural Waltham number three tried to heave Finners across the line one too many times and was trapped plumb in front. This brought Pierce Clarkin (son of our very own Jamie and recent Welly netter) in to the fray and sparked a genius move from the Crows' skipper. Jules loudly and ostentatiously signalled for Clarkin Sr to start warming up to bowl and just the very threat of this family match-up had Clarkin Jr ushering through a straight one and heading for the sanctity of the clubhouse before Jamie could be unleashed upon him. At the other end the perennially-impressive Jathavedan continued to score heavily and was joined by the hard-hitting Harvey Grout, who quickly filled the cracks that had appeared in the home sides chase. As a three-figure partnership ensued, the game still looked to be in the balance with the required rate for the final dozen overs just about in single figures. However, the pendulum swung back the other way once more when David K injected some pace into the Crows attack and he managed to eventually remove the classy Waltham opener on 113. David K shared 6 wickets equally with the excellent Rohan, as Crows finally made inroads into the home line-up and the required rate climbed exponentially in the closing overs as White Waltham were bowled out for 265.
