Match report Scott, James Scott: 005 Reporting for Duty!

The majestic scene of Englefield Estate with abundant foliage and wild animals patrolling the grounds greeted the travelling crows, as has become a custom of the Englefield fixture. The skipper, Chris Emes, strode to the middle, being careful to dodge the unknown excrement on previous match day wickets to do the toss. His excellent tossing skills put the crows in to bat, with a pitch full of pecked geese divets and a decent grass covering. The opening pair of J. O'Loughlin and G. Kruger got us off to a flying start, reaching 49 in no time depositing the bowling over the metal fence surrounding the grounds, into the gaggles of watching geese. However, both fell in quick succession which brought the Sunday Bradman (boasting a season average of 407) and Cow (Deer) Corner Dave to the crease. The pair amounted a 100 partnership, getting to the milestone with various displays of check cow corner hoiks from guess who and stokes pleasing on the eye from his partner. Despite taking his time in the 40s, DC retired on 52 with Dave (39) and the rest of the middle order coming and going at regular intervals to leave us on a very respectably score of 184-5.

Straight back out we went, as the hosts booted up the BBQ. With the smell of sizzling beef and pork filling the nostrils of some hungry Crows, Jai with an I took the new pill, accompanied by the skipper at the other end. Jai with an I soon became Jai with two Ws, as he showed an excellent display of swing bowling to remove 2 batsman in 2 balls. Unfortunately no hat trick. Not to be out done, the skipper pulled off a one handed reflex caught and bowled in nonchalant style. One Dan Cartledge said you could see the smoke of his cigarette coming from his nose. A change of bowling saw the first change partnership of AWR and James Scott brought into the attack to wet the appetite before the BBQ break. This inspired change brought no fruit however, prior to the break in play, leaving the hosts at 31-3 after 10.

Burgers had, beer drank, out we went. To set the tone for this passage of play, SJ took a wicket with the first ball after burgers, removing their star batsman for 12 with a solid grab from AWR. Christ the redeemer in full swing upon the snaffled catch, with this being the first of many times we would see this celebration. 2 overs later and 2 more wickets for SJ, one bowled and one caught by Cartledge in the gully inspired hope. The equation: 2 overs left for SJ to bowl, 7 wickets down. 12 uneventful balls later and the equation was simplified. AWR in the 18th removed the wicketkeeper to leave 2 wickets remaining. James Scott on 3. With the final over of his spell in front of him, he knew what he had to do. The first ball; a wild swing and miss. The second ball... WICKET!!! The opposition skipper chopped on leaving 4 deliveries for James to make history. Oh its on!! In strides batsman no 11, a leftie. A new challenge for SJ, as all his previous wickets had been right handers. Ball three; dot. Ball 4; down the leg side, taken well by Dan Manning. The entire team in uproar calling for the umpire to wide it. He obliged. Ball four; dot. Ball five; you guessed it, dot. Ball six; dot and the tension was rising. Having bowled the wide earlier this left James with one ball left to do the unthinkable. Ball seven; back of a length, batsman clots it, ball in the air...

CAUGHT!!!

Sparking a pitch invasion and pure jubilation from all 11 men on field, James Scott will have his name carved into the honours board. This moment caught live on camera and is currently making the rounds on social media as we speak! A very special moment everyone playing that day will never forget. Leading his team off, he then passed for an obligatory photoshoot. Many suspect these to be found on the dating apps in the not so distant future.

Post match drinks and Chat topped off what Sunday cricket is all about, however cut short by the man of the hour needing to be home for tea.
