Match report Crowthorne and Crown Wood CC 2XI beat Warfield CC 1XI in run fest

CCWCC 2XI edged out Warfield - with nearly 500 runs scored in the match – to continue pursuit of BCL Division 1B title

15th August 2022 – Crowthorne: On a day which saw temperatures reach 36C in places across the UK, arguably the most important decision happened before a ball was bowled. With 20 team mates desperately watching on, it was stand-in Crows captain that won the toss and sent Warfield out to field in the blazing sun.

With the other nine players safely ensconced in the club house, it was A C Avrili (90) and Fitz Morrissey (29) that opened for the Crows. As the sun beat down the Crows openers made hay racing to 50 without loss. As the Warfield opening pair of S Sivapalan and Dan Dray toiled in the heat, chances were few and far between. However, a moment’s lapse in concentration saw Fitz Morrissey finally saw him removed for 28 caught by keeper Charlie Fisher.
Dan Cartledge came in at three with some lusty blows before falling to a Pavan Nargund delivery which seamed and bounced catching the glove before being gobbled up by the ever-present Fisher.

This brought Mo Rizwan to the crease. Oft the unluckiest man in a Crowthorne shirt, Rizwan piled on the runs under the midday sun, eventually falling for 50, a total that would have been more had it not been for the visibly fatiguing A C Avrili at the other end.

A C Avrili then finally fell, caught and bowled, to Grant Celliers, just 10 runs short of a maiden century. With just five overs remaining, the incoming batsmen had license to swing for the fences and that they did with vigour. Mike Brundish (45*), Dave Shaw (0), Ollie Taylor (14) and Luke Taylor (2*) piling more punishment on the tiring Warfield fielders.

After the change of innings, the temperature dropped and, mercifully, shadows started to dapple the St Sebastian’s Field. Early wickets fell with Anand Soundar (3-45) and Luke Taylor (2-39) sharing the first – and only – five wickets reducing Warfield to just 79 for 5.

Lesser teams may have folded but Warfield, true to their name, continued to fight on. Some unconventional fielding, perhaps as a result of the draining heat, and fine hitting from Grant Celliers (111*) and Charlie Fisher (50*) saw Warfield needing 107 from the final 10 overs. Despite the heroics of Celliers and Fisher, Warfield CC came up just 38 runs short.

On the win, captain Andy Baines said “It was a hot, tough day, but it was a fantastic team effort to get the win. Even when Warfield were looking like getting on top of us, we didn’t panic and kept our cool.”

With the three games remaining, Crowthorne and Crown Wood CC lead the pack, but a potential banana skin awaits with a trip to mid-table Reading United on Saturday as Warfield welcome league strugglers Stallions to the Memorial Ground.
