Match report Pouncer and Strangler ensure victory on Tour Day 1

The 2021 Tour started with a convincing victory over our friends Lisvane CC. Preparation for the game included listening to "The Wheels on the Bus" and various "Report to the relevant authorities" scenarios.

Reverberations from roommate roulette were still echoing in the skipper's mind as we began proceedings. Batting order roulette meant an opening over for the Cardiff Pouncer, fortified with vitamins and minerals from his no-hand Guinness. Extracting good bounce from the drying wicket, he passed the bat on a number of occasions, 2 wickets his reward and cricket duties ably completed for the rest of the weekend having demonstrated that he can do f***ing anything. At the other end the newly named "Strangler" operated, bowling a mixture of filth and dross. Strangling the best batsman down the leg-side, his on-field work was done for the weekend too. The non-playing members returned from the pub, emboldended with alcohol, and with most welcome advice from the boundary edge. With wickets falling regularly Shilts decided to call on the fringe bowlers. Not before roommate roulette buddies Baines and Godbole had a potential fall-out moment, as Godbole in a three-ball period literally forgot how to play cricket. First dropping a sitter into his chin, secondly not moving fast enough backwards to claim a catch that went over his head and thirdly getting fooled by spin off the ground, mostly to the mirth of his teammates. The roommate took the mishaps in great humour and it was never ever mentioned again. Lisvane scored a below par 128.

The batting started with the previously hapless Godbole and the singlet-wearing Davies. After one over Davies called for the helmet, sadly a waste of time as he went two balls later, probably psyching himself out by thinking the helmet was required. What followed was a batting masterclass from Godbole, Ant Avrili, Finucane, Shaw and Hester. The younger Avrili in particular impressing with sweetly timed shots all around the wicket. Runs flowed, beers were drunk, James Scott bowled 40 overs in the nets, the bar tab grew and grew. A beautiful, poignant end to the game came when Sparkle, playing his annual cricket game, simply sparkled the ball over mid-wicket for four and sealed the comprehensive victory.

All that was left to was to have a celebratory beer, settle the bar tabs and move on to Cardiff hand-in-hand with roommates anew, for the next instalment of the CCWCC Cardiff legend.
