Sonning v Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Sunday 1st XI on Sun 02 Aug 2020 at 1:30 pm

Match report
SUNDAY, BLOODY SUNDAY IN SONNING
Chilled out entertainer and debutant captain rocked up confident of a result against a side self-described as ‘weak and inexperienced’ but was immediately brought down to earth when one of his fielders informed him he wanted to field in a pair of crocs, let’s call him John R for privacy sake, actually that’s too obvious, J.Reypert.
Not wanting to go viral on popular twitter account @Villagecricket, AFS Long quickly produced a spare pair of spikes to save the day. A gentlemen’s agreement between the sides led to Sonning batting first as their weak side was slightly stronger with willow in hand. The game itself was a timed game, a hark back to a bygone era.
Some generous opening bowling got the innings off to the worst possibly start and soon the incumbent skipper and turned to the wily (not in a racist way) experience of messers AFS Long and DP Partridge, to reel in the opposition and took a wicket each thanks to sharp glovework and fielding.
Having taken 4 overs to reach 50 the opposition did not pass 100 until the second sanitation break, a superb effort from the first change bowlers and Sheppard. What followed was nothing short of miraculous, the number 3 batsman, part of a line up dubbed ‘weak and inexperienced’ pre-match clubbed 110* off 88 balls in the most brutal display of beginners luck the game has ever seen.
A tough spell followed with the crows struggling to gain a foothold in the game. Some fantastic bowling by Foxy, who was the only bowler to get the ball swinging round corners, and a brilliant death over by Jonathan forced Sonning to extend their innings by a couple of overs, which proved crucial, and both deserved their wickets, especially john who had fielded brilliantly on the boundary along with Joe Birkett. The declaration came on 38 overs with 276 on the board. A tough session for the Crows in merciless heat and lightning fast outfield.
After tea out strolled Som and Saviour to start the innings and after some gentle coercion and bribery AFS Long went out for the first umpiring stint. Both started well and looked extremely comfortable before falling in quick succession for 11 and 19, respectively. A couple more wickets fell and at 43-4 the losing draw looked a long way away for the Crows. What followed was nothing short of herculean.
Joe Birkett played beautifully for 43 and Pete Clarke ably assisted him with a brutal 34. Both fell to a first team bowler, who in the spirit of the game only bowled 10 overs, and by now Sonning had riled Golding, leaving them faced with Tesco’s maddest man. With 10 overs to go the Crows had 4 wickets in hand and could smell the sweet taste of a losing draw. AFS Long soon went without troubling the scorers (there was inevitably some minor teething issues with the iPad) Monty fell soon after and it was up to Golding to bat out the final 6 overs with young Jonathan at the other end.
A controversial decision left the Crows 9 down and on the verge of defeat. The umpiring reminiscent of the Brexit referendum, highly controversial and with close links to Russia. A bizarre period followed, with the fielding team cheering every wide and no ball whilst the batsmen shook their head in disbelief. Stoic batting from both Golding and Partridge meant they were never troubled, and some terrible chat from all round the wicket only hardened their resolve. A great result in difficult circumstances for the Crows and everyone played their part.
When questioned by local press after the game over whether he had deliberately injured regular Sunday captain Mikey the day before. Golding replied ‘ooh no’ before winking and sloping off into the night. The question of the opposition’s strength was brought up in the post-match interview and the debutant skipper merely replied, ‘I prefer not to speak, if I speak I am in big trouble’.
MOTM – Joe Birkett for batting superbly after a marathon effort in the field, and Saviour for being the only Crow to work out how to use the electronic scoreboard after a succession of luddites had a crack at deciphering it.
