Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Women's 2nd XI v Binfield on Thu 24 Apr 2025 at 6:15pm
Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Won by 8 wickets
Match report
BINFIELD DEFEATED IN LAST OVER THRILLER!
The Women's 2nd XI got their season off to a great start with a thrilling 8-wicket last over win against rivals Binfield at a sun drenched Holme Grange School.
Binfield batted first and the openers built a solid if not spectacular platform before retiring. The change of batters did not work in the visitors favour as Lou Walker bowled Jackie Rawes for 1, whilst Gill O'Loughlin dismissed Sophie Studd thanks to a smart catch from Nik Mansfield. 8 bowlers were used with Kate Pobjoy and Nikki Meades returning the most economical bowling figures - conceding 9 and 5 runs respectively off their 2 over spells.
Binfield limped to a respectable 95/2 off their allotted 16 overs. Would it be enough, everyone wondered?.
In reply, the Coyotes got off to a great start with Helena Jones plundering 3 consecutive boundaries in a first over that was reminiscent of the great West Indies Opener Desmond Haynes in his 90's pomp. The pick of which was late cut/nudge/dab/guide down to the vacant "Third" boundary. Hels was to make 19 before being bowled, whilst at the other end, Jo Lee anchored the innings with a solid 14.
Jo and Kate Pobjoy scampered some good singles but runs were hard to come by. Jo's retirement bought in-form Gabi Jones to the crease with a clear instruction to "get on with it" as the sun disappeared behind the school and night time began to fall.
Gabi batted superbly firstly with Kate and then with Marsha Connolly to get up with the run rate. Several hefty blows and some good running to take the match to the wire. The winning runs were achieved off the penultimate ball and a solid opening victory of the season was secured.
Skipper Lorna Owens told the assembled members of the press: "What a start to the season for the 2nd Xl. A win with one ball in hand meant that we had to work for every run and that we did. The fielding was fantastic tonight. Everyone settled into their positions and after a couple of wee tweaks, we kept Binners at bay. There was some great bowling on display with wickets taken by Lou and Nik took a beautiful catch from a great delivery by Gill O'Loughlin.
I have to mention Gill's flying catch too. It was poetry in motion and just such a shame that it was a free hit so you didn't get a wicket from it. Choppers, I thought for a while you were playing in goal for football and not cricket tonight with those flying saves keeping the ball going out for 4's. I loved how fluid everyone was tonight in the field so thanks to each and everyone of you. On to our batting. A cracking opening from Hels and Jo. Great backing up and a steady wracking up of runs. Kate then also put in a very solid performance before we put on our super sub in the shape of our very own Gabi (thank you so much for stepping up with such short notice) who brought the win home for us aided and abetted by Chops. You should all be very proud of yourselves tonight as I most certainly am. Finally thanks to you all for a really slick set up and take down which was very appreciated.
Thanks to Hamish for umpiring, Sam for scoring. Our support team in the shape of Matt, Steph, Thea, Dan and Gillie."
Hartley Wintney are the next visitors to Fortress Holme Grange on Thursday 1st May where the coyotes 2's will be hoping to build on the trilling victory against Binfield.
