Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club League 1st XI v Woodley on Sat 20 Jul 2019 at 1:00 pm
Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Won By 26 Runs
Match report
With changeable weather throughout Friday with thunderstorms threatening to call off the game. But once again, the microclimate of Crowthorne saw no early morning downpours and some great committed grounds work from JC saw the game start on time. It was a tough toss to win and any decision was going to prove tough to justify so W.Avrili decided to lose the toss and was put in to bat by the Woodley Skipper.
Out strode A.Cluett and G.Pun to start off our innings, N.Outram was running late and as the 2 openers walked over the boundary rope N.Outram was busy being hit by sick by one of his kids on the way to the match. A mix up in communication saw G.Pun run out by A.Cluett, who denied any responsibility in the post-match interview. Outram had finally turned up and was ready to go out…just, coming off the back of some rich vain of form he started positively but was undone by his wayward cross batted shot that hasn’t been seen for a few weeks. This wicket was only to make way for the Skipper, captain fantastic, The Dictator, W.Avrili, having been for an early morning net he was ready to face the fight, having scored a TON earlier in the season to the same opposition. A.Cluett and W.Avrili started to pile on the pressure scoring freely on a hot day at St sebs, the slow outfield was starting to take it’s toll on both batsmen and A.Cluett eventually fell for a very good 40. A slight change in batting order saw Brundish and Cartledge come out in an attempt to pinch hit in the middle overs, but a low ball to Brundish saw him clean bowled and a little hot headedness from Cartledge saw him stumped off a loopy dolly ball from the experienced old time bowler. Out came J.Cluett who has been in the runs of late, and Saturday was no different, he began to bully the bowlers, smearing fours all over the ground. With a few overs remaining he was eventually caught behind and on came the Dr, The Judge, J.O’Loughlin who helped push our score even further to the 200 mark. W.Avrili eventually fell to a wide delivery that saw him stumped, he left the field with a strong 52 after a few weeks low scores he was back to his old ways. The final few balls were seen off by the 2 young guns of Emes and The Duchess, picking up a few valuable runs at the death both finishing not out.
After a wonderful tea from Mrs Cluett it was time for the Crows to take to the field for a tough defence of 189. Avrili’s rousing speech before the team went out was all about courage and bravery, both would be needed to ensure the win. A new opening partnership has begun to blossom with S.Chandran and J.Sussex putting pressure on the opening bowlers. And S.Chandran would take the first early scalp with an easy catch for C.Emes at mid-on. Both the openers restricted the run rate as J.Cluett and C.Emes came on to continue the assault on the Woodley batsmen. J.Cluett and wickets go hand in hand so it was no surprise when he took his wicket of the number 3 batsman clean bowling him for 15. After seeing this, C.Emes was getting jealous and wanted to join the party, a blistering spell with some real heat and aggression finally gave him what he desired most, but not without some help from The Judge. Emes was banging the ball in short hitting the splice was every ball, but a slightly wider ball was there to have a flash at, but the batsman found The Judge who took a Worldie catch low down to his left that was reminisicent of one of the great fielders in the game of cricket. After the catch he said “I have no idea where I caught that”, it was truly one of the great catches at St Sebs. After Emes’ blistering spell Jules came on, high off his catch to continue the good work the 2 first changes had done. Operating from the other end A.Cluett continued his steady work from the previous week and took the prize wicket of the opening bat who was starting to get ahead of steam. Wickets began to fall at regular intervals, particular mentions must go to N.Outram for moving the site screen for A.Cluett when a pesky left hander was at the crease. A wonderful high catch from D.Cartledge in the deep saw the end of the big hitting middle order batsman. Eventually we were down to the last 2 batsman who were still looking to win the game require 40 from the last 5 overs. However, C.Emes and S.Chandran came back into the attack and produced some wonderful death bowling to dismiss the final 2 wickets.
A fantastic win for the crows in some difficult conditions in the middle overs, a shout out to G.Pun who dropped a dolly then went on to take a fantastic catch at short fine leg to earn redemption and S.Chandran who also dropped a dolly who took the final wicket with a caught and bowled, seemingly showing that he only takes catches off his own bowling. Well done to all, after the match W.Avrili was interviewed by the press and said, “the win was set with my batting performance, but I guess the bowlers helped a bit”. A great effort by everyone on Saturday and another win to add to the ever-growing list!
