Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Won by 4 wickets

Match report TOP TEAM TOPPLED AS CROWS STUN BCS

In a rollercoaster of a season, CCWCC 1s had completed 10 games up to this point, winning 6 and losing 4. BCS on the other hand came into the game top of the league, with an impressive 8 wins and just 1 defeat in their 9 completed games.

Right from the off however, the league leaders knew they were in a battle, losing 2 early wickets after being asked to bat by stand-in skipper J. Cluett. It was the regal opening pair of The Earl of Chandran and the Duchess of Sussex that did the early damage, sending the dangerous Akram brothers packing in quick time with a wicket a-piece. In fact it was a fantastic contest between bat and ball throughout the first half of the BCS innings, with the Crows bowlers applying pressure and the BCS hitters trying to break their shackles at every opportunity. The left-handed number 3 was the key batsman for BCS, who rode his luck at times but showed a good technique too. The turning point in the game was his wicket for 41, when The Golding Nugget induced a lofted drive and player/coach Outram plucked the ball out of the air with one hand. This fielding was typical of a fired-up Crows unit that maintained an excellent standard throughout to support their bowlers.

This passage of play saw BCS reduced to 114-4, with Jaffa taking the other wicket via a juggled catch from The Earl. It was at this point two key things happened. The first was the introduction into the attack of Colonel Anthony Cluett, who took a wicket in his first over (a strong sign of things to come), bowling the barrel-chested number 5 with a peach of a flighted off-break. The second was a remarkable beamer-wicket-beamer passage of play from The Nugget, seeing the batsman removed and 1 ball later the bowler too. The nonplussed Golding was the second victim in 2 weeks for the Crows of the 2-beamer rule, begging a question of Outram's coaching. It was The Colonel who undoubtedly turned the game in the Crows favour though, as he ran rampant through the BCS tail claiming truly remarkable figures of 5 for 7. This superb spell turned a likely chase of 180-200 into a much more achievable 150, as A. Cluett completed his Michelle by bowling the number 11, dismissing BCS for 149.

The Crows began their pursuit of 150 in typical fashion, immediately collapsing to 55-5 with only Coach Outram holding firm. The wicket was getting lower and lower throughout the day, and with a bit of sideways movement too the strong BCS bowling line up was demonstrating how they had climbed to the league's summit. Nick was joined at the crease by captain Cluett, with Jaffa determined to maintain his 100% win record as skipper in 2019. The BCS bowlers and fielders went from confident, to frustrated, to despondent, as Outram and Cluett set about grinding their way towards the total. It was a partnership notable for its sensible shot selection and hard-running, with just the rare bad ball severely punished. By the time the tired Jaffa finally succumbed for 36 the hard work was done, with the 84 partnership leaving just 11 more required. Godbole was the man to stroll to the crease, impressing his adoring fans with a lusty boundary to complete an excellent Crows win. Outram remained unbeaten on 62, without doubt one of his finest innings for the club.

At his post-match press conference Jeff Cluett was in a confident mood, praising Outram for being "the rock on which his triumph was built", and even allowing some small praise for his brother's "decent few overs to mop up the tail". He saved his most effusive praise, as usual, for himself, claiming that his "captain's innings was all but the final nail in the coffin for the failed Avrili regime".
