Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club League 1st XI v Shinfield on Sat 25 May 2019 at 1:00 pm
Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Lost by 140 runs
Match report
Another Saturday rolled around, the second home game of the season, filled with anticipation and excitement as ever. The weather was set fair some even deciding to don sun cream for the first time this year. Having looked at the pitch the ONES captain was prepared to have a good bowling session first up, this was made clearer when the Shinfield obliged by winning the toss and electing to bat. Both captains walked back talking of sportsmanship fair play and good spirit of the game, however this would be the last talk of such niceties for the foreseeable future….
The Crows started well with C.Emes continuing is great run of form with a wicket early on in the innings with a ball seemingly destined for the leg side was somehow defelceted back onto the stumps by the batsman, who departed for 0. A great start for the Crows and the pressure was well and truly on another quick wicket and the game would be well and truly ON, however the Shinfield umpire had other ideas….a great ball just back of a length from C.Emes was flirted at by the Shinfield opening batsman and it took the edge, the ball deviating in the air and was dutifully grabbed by the ONES captain. The cheers went up, players embracing each other as another wicket had fallen…or so we thought…. After the initial jubilation of another wicket we were brought sharply down to earth when the Shinfield umpire decided not to give out what can only be described as a blatant edge behind. This sparked furious exclamations from the Crows, the umpire suggesting the batsman was ‘nowhere near the ball’ which we could all see and hear was not true (video evidence is available online). This unfortunately would sour the rest of the day, but this did not stop crows from continuing to fight which is testament to the character and togetherness the team and club has. More wickets would fall at regular intervals and at 130 -6 it looked like we would keep them under 180 but alas after the drinks break some pinch hitting got Shinfield to a healthy total of 212 with some tidy catching in the deep from D.Crinnion and M.Vogel stifling an even better score. 212 was still a chaceable score and great bowling and fielding display cannot go amiss. All bowlers were important with M.Vogel, C.Emes and D.Crinnion all picking up a brace of wickets, particular mention must got to our debutant T.Ryan picking up his maiden wicket for the crows and bowled superbly, and G.Pun who picked up 2 wickets and took home the MoM award.
After a frosty lunch break the eagerly awaited return of R.Barron to the Crows front line was a real plus for us. After a decent start from both Barron and Nikunj the wickets began to tumble, some tidy bowling from the Shinfield openers really put the pressure on the Crows and unfortunately no one was able to get a foothold in the game with only a few players managing to make it to double figures. Crinnion and Emes did their best to steady the ship but too many holes saw the Crows sink to 78 all out.
After the game the ONES captain was in a philosophical mood in his post-match team talk, he said to his players, “There’s no victory in cheating, I’d rather lose fairly than cheat and win”. We go again next weekend away to Mortimer, another tough game but we comeback stronger.
Well done to all the lads and look forward to getting back out there.
