Match report "The yoof" light up the game as the darkness falls.
Sent in to field on a scorching September Sunday, the grown ups set root in the infield whilst the youth of Pete and Ollie were let loose with the new ball. Tidy spells and a couple of wickets and before we knew it, they were 80 for 5. Time to let the rope out a little and James Scott unleashed a couple of overs which allowed the batsmen to push the runs. No sooner was the cat out of the bag, but the batsmen started to run away with the game and at 30 overs we were looking down the barrel of 240+. A quick team talk at drinks did the trick, first a run out of their star batsmen and then Partridge cleaned up the tail with ruthless efficiency. 212 didn't seem out of reach.
Judge and Dave strolled out to bat and soon abandoned their plan of batting sensibly with both preferring the aerial route to their favourite corners of the ground. Runs were flowing but so were wickets and at 99 for 6, it was looking perilous. Demoted down the order in some sort of crazy demonstration of new found power, Sussex and Golding started to set about the tiring attack. The runs kept flowing and the countdown began. Once it got down to 30, the media attention grew and the facebook live stream started. 152 for 9 had become 200 for 9 with Pete Emes in particular dispatching the bowlers to all parts and we approached a thrilling climax. With a final over needing 8 to win, the crows were smelling blood. The only issue was that is was now night and no one could see the ball. A few singles were run. 5 off 2 the equation and a sharp bit of fielding led to a run out to dash any hopes of headingley-esque heroics. Amazing batting from Pete (34) and K dog (28*) almost brought it home. Almost.
Great game, super spirit from both sides and what Sunday cricket is all about.
