Checkendon v Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Sunday 1st XI on Sun 09 Jun 2019 at 2:00 pm
Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Won by 2 wickets
Match report
CHECK-AND-JOB-DONE
Crows see out Checkendon as Sturgess shines on Debut.
Crows made it three in a row with a 2 wicket victory over Checkendon CC.
Brundish only had 10 available so pulled a few strings with his friends agent and all the paper work in on deadline day, Dan Sturgess from Phoenix Old Boys came in to take crows to a full XI.
After a long journey and everyone present and accounted for, it could not be said for Checkendon as due to personal issues they only had 7 before the start of play.
Brundish being the gentlemen he is won the toss and decided to bowl on what looked like a decent batting track and the sun shining, as they had two players on their way but wouldn't be there till late.
DC was thrown the new ball once again after last weeks good spell for a quick burst, who bowled well squaring up the opening pair with some unplayable deliveries. Dan's persistence was rewarded as he dismissed the Captain which was a well held high catch by Sturgess (fear the ringer😎)
Sunday debutante J Sussex also bowled his heart and soul out but was unfortunately not rewarded, as the return of legend John Reypert was more interested in the birds flying over head.
Ran (ish) round from point and surprised himself he got there but could hold on. J Suss also missed a C+B opportunity with his last ball and left nothing behind after a herculean effort after Saturdays performance.
Bad man Emes was first change and continued his good form from the week before. Bowling with good pace and tidy line and length bagged himself a wicket caught by you guessed it. The Ringer himself 👊😎.
Sturgess was brought on to replace J Suss, and showed no fear of first match nerves and bowled tidily, a couple of stray short ones but nothing to write home about. Apart form one in particular.
Sturge dropped it short which stuck in the pitch and took what felt like an age to reach the batsmen, who threw all and the kitchen sink at it, only for him to edge into his face. Apparently it was 'meant to be a yorker) 🤨
He did get his wicket tracker off the mark though with Dave Shaw taking the catch. Could it be the first of many for the club? The skipper is currently contract negotiations with his agent.
Partridge yet to get off the mark on the maiden tracker couldn't quite get the big M but bowled menacingly. Using the 'brow wipe' effectively, picked up two wickets himself, one with a great catch in the 'Worldie Zone.'
Checkendons two other players had arrived. Out strode S.jobe (in trackie bottoms) everyone knows what that means.
Wickets began to fall at regular intervals with the multi instrumentalist Papa Emes hitting the right note and bagged himself a wicket off his though slightly expensive two overs.
And it became true as he smash bang and walloped his way to 49... Before Dave Shaw spilt the catch at mid off which he ran through for 50.
Bad man Emes bowled at the death with Sturgess and bowled well with Checkendon despite the player issues managed a very defendable 179.
Bad man Emes looked to continue her s good form with the bat alongside John Reypert to lead the Crows charge, Rupes was undone early as was Dave Shaw who was not long after.
Our newly crowned 'overseas player' Chris Allwright began to steady the ship Putting away the bad balls. Emes looked to go on the offensive but became unstuck and was bowled after the pair put on a very handy 51 partnership.
DC now back in form looked in good touch playing sensible and picking gaps as did Chris, they found a gap so big that DC shouted 'we can run four there!' Chris' heart skipped, maybe even stopped beating as much to Chris' resistance, the fourth run was ran and Chris collapsed in a heap and an ambulance was almost rang. He got up gingerly and staggered back to his guard which Chris like a wounded animal threw everything and the kitchen sink at the next ball but hit nothing but fresh air and was clean bowled. After Chris eventually dragged his abused body off the field and was a spent force.
DC and J Suss looked to rebuild after Damo was unfortunately dismissed quickly, J suss took like a duck to water In the all rounder role and played sensible cricket before a rush of blood had him caught. Captain incoming.
After bringing the game home the day before the skipper looked to do the same and go back to back, Brundish couldn't get the ball rolling like he wanted and was out LBW (Still think it pitched outside leg) and was given by none other than .... Dave Shaw.
James Scott then got his first taste of batting on the front line, but however wasn't in for long but did get off the mark, Sturgess followed with partridge as the last line of defense. Crows were running out of options, and time. However, in true fashion, DC showed why he's the class act he is as himself and Sturgess saw the game home with DC finishing 82* and Sturgess 2* respectively.
Brundish spoke to the press after the game and said "another great performance today from everyone, James Scott once again done brilliantly in the field, Sturge coming in late and bowled well. Another great win and we just want to continue this good form we have right now'
Could Sturgess be a potential transfer target?
Brundish was asked about a potential transfer for Sturgess and he said. 'We are in talks with his agent, I can't say anymore on the matter right now.'
