Match report
The Miracle of Stanlake Meadow
Bainos is Colossus – Crows twirler has Twyford in a spin
It’s official. Miracles do happen. No, not England winning the World Cup (that’s just silly) but Crows 2nd XI snatching an improbable victory from the jaws of defeat against table-topping Twyford & Ruscombe.
Things started predictably enough as tosser Hurricane called wrong yet again and Crows were inserted on a flat deck by the much fancied (by themselves) Twyhard. Matters progressed uneventfully as Crows compiled a careful half-century opening partnership, followed by a steady middle order effort with everyone chipping in, notably Nikhil and Winchy, whose 31 hoisted the Crows total to a respectable 162-9. It was a decent effort against some accurate Twytoohard bowling and a trigger-happy home umpire. But it was far from a daunting total.
So it was that Crows took to the field after tea with, let’s be honest, modest expectations. Twyfeared were certainly confident of knocking off the runs, none more so than their gung-ho opener who attempted to do it in one shot – only managing to be caught off the first ball of the innings, before trudging off to finish his half-eaten coronation chicken sandwich.
But Crows glimmer of early hope was quickly extinguished and there were no further surprises for a very long time, as Toogood & Rushem’s second-wicket pair put together a brisk partnership of 115. The pitch became ever flatter, the outfield ever faster, and the sun ever hotter, and – despite some persevering Crows bowling – the opposition, were looking ever cockier. With an aggressive opener and an obdurate Oxford University poshboy at the crease, Thrashem & Floggem only needed 48 more runs, with 9 wickets standing. Our fate was sealed. Game over…
Skipper Funniname looked forlornly round the field for someone who wanted a bowl. Everyone looked away. By now Crows fielders could be heard muttering “let’s get it over with quickly” and “at least we’ll have more time in the pub”.
But they had forgotten one thing: Bainosios’s previous epic match-winning 7-14 at Shitfield. Luckily, the skipper hadn’t. With diehard Brummy brio he played Crows’ final card. It turned out to be an Ace.
Crows’ legendary Twirly King, motivated by the chance of taking his 100th league wicket (and 200th in total) for Crowthorne, cast his spinning spell again. And magic it certainly was, as he transfixed well-set batsmen and rabbits alike to claim 6 for 48. Ably assisted by three key wickets from Danny Boy, with his own mysterious brand of flight and guile, and some excellent fielding – notably two smart catches from Bad Chris Emes, and two skiers and a stumping from Saviour, ever eager to Sheppard Crows to victory (and grab some more headlines).
Wickets tumbled, but runs also kept coming. This was a match Crows never really looked like winning. As StillTwying’s last man came to the crease they were just a couple of blows short of victory. Thankfully, the dependable Nirav bowled full and straight, as he has all season, pinning the no11 LBW to seal the most unlikely Crows victory in living memory.
“We was robbed,” blubbed Tired & Emotional’s players, as the jubilant Crows fled the scene of the crime. They certainly had been.
