Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club League 1st XI v Harpsden on Sat 04 Aug 2018 at 12:30 pm
Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Lost by 5 wickets
Match report
Mind games started early in this match as Crows refused to unlock the pavilion until the eleventh hour. No sooner had the keen beans of Harspden had got inside, they had unpacked their cones and training aids and three different fielding drills were going on. Crows spent a while looking for some bails and some people had a smoke. Young Avrili marched to the middle and won the toss electing to bat in the heat of the day. First over 8-0 and the projected total of 416 looked promising. But then the ball started misbehaving and wickets started to tumble. At 40-3 the previous total of 89 was looking more likely and the Judge and Mikey Brundish set root. Maiden after maiden followed and slowly the bowlers got bored and threw up some tasty morsels which allowed a few runs to flow. After another flurry of wickets we were 100 or so and 6 down and after some swashbuckling shots from Marvin and Sin trying to play like Kohli (Sin was bowled in this attempt), the Crows set 138 to win. A minor victory in being able to have tea before the second innings. Will's team talk stalled a couple of times as players clearly couldn't be arsed to listen to his chat and would rather make their gloves wet (?) but without about 9 players not having an excuse to avoid it, he gave the rallying cry. "I'm not going to talk about cliches like one wicket brings two, but it does". Powerful stuff. Early breakthroughs came as the bounce continued to bamboozle the batsmen and the only runs seemed to come through the air. Sin found another one in his first over and Joe got a couple and the Harpsden batsmen looked nervous. Even the umpire started fielding one for us, using his arm to stop a certain four. Surely we couldn't actually win one? No. But we made a great job of it and it took some real gritty batting from them to grind it out in 44 overs to get to 140. Heads held high and promising signs for the future.
