Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club League 1st XI v West Reading on Sat 05 May 2018 at 12:30 pm
Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Lost by 8 wickets
Match report
It was a beautiful day down at St Sebs, the sun was shining and players were met with a glorious green outfield and a brand new wicket, teasing us with anticipation.
Spirits were up even after the first toss of the season was lost. Crows into bat ... how would the wicket play with moisture in the air.
With the ball moving around in the air and off the seam it wasn't to be the Crows day. The first wicket went down with 1 run on the board (leg bye) - TrIgger LBW, and a further run later, Nikunj followed to a dubious LBW decision (there was bat involved!). The Skipper strode to the crease and quickly returned, bowled.
Wests no 2 bowler high no balled twice and was off (que very angry bowler!)
So at 6 for 3 it was time for the middle order engine to fire, and briefly it looked like it would, until Brundish left a straight one (well it was straight after it moved off the wicket) to be bowled, DC looking good with 2 fours pulled cleanly to the boundary only to pat a full toss to midwicket and Will "Talisman - NOT" Avrili drove into the Chest of the opposition Captain (27 for 6). What could the the lower middle order and tail do. Much more as it turned out. Ganes, in at 7, survived more balls than the top 6 combined. Marvin on his debut couldn't keep the spinner out, but Crooky pummelled a few to top score with 17 and then missed one, Sin did much the same (pummel may not be quite the word but he did hit one boundary!). And who should remain undefeated but the Veteran on his 45th Birthday (+ 1 day). Ravi GODbole was left stranded on 12, looking for that big ton that would have saved the day. 75 all out!
Doh - not quite how this report was planned to be written.
There was still a twist ...
Spin was brought on, Marvin into the attack instantly playing games with the batsman - First ball, induced a false shot as it lifted tantalisingly over Outram at Mid-off just out of reach. However, 4 balls later the stumps clattered and the batsman had to depart beaten by the spin. Was there still a story to be told, with Godbole to bowl and Chandran, Crook, Brundish champing at the bit. Could it be. 2 for 1 ...
Godbole bowled tightly but there as no breakthrough. Into the attack came Crook, could his bowling match his batting heroics - 5 balls later we found out - NO!!! 2 high no balls and he was off too. But not before Trig had illicited an explective filled response from the still fuming Wests No2 bowler.
While Crows fielded valliantly, the runs trickled on and the twist unravelled. A consolation wicket to Sin (as always) taken by Brundish at Gully was not enough and even two overs from the Brundish homself could not stave off the inevitable. And with the final ball sailing over the rope the game was well and truly done.
New opposition next week, and to finish on a positive note - it can only get better from here!
