Match report CROWS 3’S STUN BINFIELD IN SPEEDY RUN-CHASE

Crows 3rd XI Made it back-to-back wins as the batsmen made light work to knock off 200 runs at Sol Joel Park.

Bowling first , the Crows toiled in the afternoon sunshine as Binfield top order exploited the batsman-friendly conditions to make a solid start. With no joy for wily new ball pairing of Miller and Clarke, skipper John Cartledge turned to ever wilier pairing of Partridge and Long.

With 40 on the board and both openers looking well set, the runs needed to be stifled and wickets were needed. Several very tight overs ensued as the 2 stalwarts of local cricket plied their trade in tandem. This pressure finally lead to a breakthrough as Partridge trapped Devarakonda bang in front for 16.
Cartledge then shuffled his pack in an attempt to make further in-roads into the Binfield ranks. Several bowlers were tried but similar result attained. Any bad balls were punished and any sloppy fielding harshly exposed.

John Humphrey batted superbly for 71 and Vineet Choumal rode his luck for 42 before Ven Shashank pegged back his middle pole.

Humphrey’s demise was an historic moment as Long claimed his 500th wicket in a glittering Crows career. Using all his guile and nous accumulated over the years he removed the dangerous Humphrey at the point he could have gone on to make a substantial total.

At the other end Skipper Cartledge made amends for a simple dropped catch by taking a much more tricky c&b and almost taking a superb one. He also took another scalp with a decent catch from Nikhil Pande.

Crows had dragged themselves back into the game with a tight final few overs and the target off 200 was certainly in their sights as the players tucked into a hearty tea.

Crows Openers Dave McQuitty and Krishna Adadda strode out to the middle knowing their team needed a solid start if they were to succeed. McQuitty playing his usual dogged anchor role steadied the ship as Krishna decided to follow his Captains suggestion and get in amongst the bowling as soon as possible.

They put on 47 for the first wicket before McQuitty chopped one on to his stumps and departed for 8. This bought Nikhil Pande to the crease to join Krishna. The scoreboard started to tick over nicely as Krishna slipped though the gears and Pande played the ball on it’s merits, exploiting some erratic bowling and the quick outfield.

The pair put on 87 before Krishna was run out for a sublime 67. This bought about the promotion on Partridge to number 4. With time running out before his premature scheduled departure, he arrived at the crease with only one intention. Quick runs.

With a flurry of heaved pull shots to complement Pande’s elegant innings, Partridge struck an agricultural 25 in a partnership of 56 before missing/leaving a straight one with just 10 needed for victory.

The winning runs came soon after Pande had joined Krishna’s effort of reaching his maiden 50 for the club and victory had been sewn up in just 36.4 overs.
Speaking to the assembled members of the local and national press Cartledge heaped praise on the Talismanic Long: “For such a shy, modest, almost humble man as Aran to achieve this statistical milestone is a truly great achievement. He bowled through the pain barrier today to help the team and this speaks volumes for the man, the player, the champion that he is.”

Long was keen to interject. “Obviously when you’ve been taking wickets as long as I have you tend not to look too closely at personal milestones. Until someone told me before the game that I was on 499 I would never had known. These are the sort of personal triumphs that you look back on at the end of your career with great pride.”

Cartledge also was keen to acknowledge the small contribution others had made to the victory “Obviously, today is all about Aran and his 500 wickets, but it would be wrong of me not to mention the efforts of Krishna and Nikhil to knock the runs off for us. Both fully deserve the credit they will receive when the dust settles on Aran’s remarkable feat.”

When probed by the press about his future plans, the ever modest Long quipped “I’m not sure I’ve got another 500 wickets in me to be honest but my next goal is to reach 500 runs for the club, too”
