Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club League 2nd XI v Emmbrook & Bearwood 2 on Sat 10 Jun 2017 at 1:00 pm
Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Lost by 2 wickets
Match report
Crows went into their match at home against bottom of the table Emmbrook AND Bearwood with high hopes of extended their three match unbeaten run, but as any follower of the Championship-esque BCL Division 2 will know, nothing could be taking for granted.
A losing toss saw Jules and Tom take the field armed with the willows on a green looking pitch and a lush outfield due the the grass improvement programme. It became clear boundaries would be hard to come by as they set about building a score. The ability to bat 45 overs under the strong and stable leadership of skipper Finucane has been a marked difference to boom or bust batting lineups of the last year or two, and anchored by a fine 48 from Jules and lower-middle order acceleration from Ant and Doug, 150 seemed a competitive if par total.
In the field Crows opening bowlers Rajesh and Finners put in long tight spells, both conceding 20 runs for one wicket each; the pacy Rajesh particularly unlucky to see a couple of edges hit the floor and one or two more through the gap between slips and gully. Emmbrook and Bearwood's chunky big hitters were at the crease when Bainsey and Nirav were brought in to the attack; this can go one of two ways for the slow left-armer and this was one of those where the big hits were just out of reach and into the gaps in the field, when so often the the flight and guile sees a catch in the deep or a stumping.
As Emmbrook pushed above the the 100 mark and towards the total, a throw-down stumping from keeper Chris, and well taken catch from the skipper in the deep and a sharp one-hander from Saviour in gully turned the game on its head once again and Emmbrook were showing why wins have been so hard to come by this year. Shambolic running from the tail saw Rajgopalan run out and Crows were two wickets from victory, but more near misses and the odd difficult drop and Emmbrook were home for an ultimately deserved win in another tight game for the 2s.
