Match report
Match report courtesy of Sinith Chandran...
Bat not heavy enough!
Having reached at Waltham St Lawrence much before the start time, the Crows players soon got to know that the spectacular "Gandhi" was playing for WSL. There were long debates on which Gandhi was the better one. We then got the confirmation that we indeed had the spectacular Gandhi playing for WSL.
Gandhi playing for WSL was not the only bad news we were going to hear that afternoon. The dreaded news of us losing the toss soon followed.
Bainsey soon took over as the scorer, just to avoid standing in the sun as the umpire for the first 20 overs or so. Number ten and eleven seemed to be the obvious choice as Nirav and Sin made their way to the middle to be the umpires.
Crows openers - Tom and Jules got the score board ticking along nicely. The pair added 51 runs before Jules, trying to play a low full toss, skied one to the fielder at square leg. Chris wasn't too keen on playing a long innings and ended up letting one through the gate. Enter Naga, exit Naga - trying to play a shot which one would hope will never be repeated by any batsman playing cricket. Having forgotten he was carrying a bat, Naga felt the need to use his pads to stop the ball hitting the stumps. A bemused Sin giving him out as he could not even lie to the bowler that the ball would be missing the stumps.
Naga's downfall saw the arrival of the Cow Corner Dave. Carrying a bat with duck tape stuck to it Dave soon started to check the catching skills of the fielders on the .. (you guessed it, leg side). Sin begged Dave to change the bat as the duck tape was causing the shots to make the sound of a plastic bat. Chris unwillingly lent his bat to Dave to which Dave was heard saying that the "Bat is not heavy enough". Sin had heard enough complaints from Dave about the bat being too light, that he had to dash to the dressing room to bring his heavy SS bat. Dave once again complained about the bat and soon started a catching practise session to the fielders on the leg side. Oh, there was a shot on the off side too but it didn’t travel far enough for the opposition to move all their 9 fielders from the leg side to the off side. By this time Tom had seen enough and with not many runs being added Tom decided to launch one towards the long off only to be caught on the ropes by Gujjar (only one who seemed to know to catch a cricket ball). The catching practise from Dave came to an end when he decided to miss a ball that turned a mile to clean up his off stump.
Joe Hardy and the skipper tried to steady the ship adding few runs before Chris having eaten his pasta (yes, believe it or not!) and can of coke didn't seem to want to spend the whole afternoon umpiring, raised the finger to send the skipper marching back to the pavilion. Joe Hardy then got out to a good ball by WSL's chairman. Dan Crinnion having hit the first ball for a boundary, let a straight one knock his stumps over. Nirav added 1 run before Bainsey who added a quick 20 was Allwright's second victim. Bainsey was seen staring at the TV replays of his was not happy with Alwright's decision. Nirav had no plans to stick for a long time either and having promised Naga to replay Naga's dismissal decided to stop the ball hitting the stumps using his pads and not the bat. Naga seemed really keen in giving him out who quickly raised the finger.
With the opposition failing to switch the kettle on, the team was made to wait for their cuppa.
After the dismal batting efforts, captain Finners led a spirited talk in a huddle. Captain then ordered Sin to take the side that would see him run into the wind. Having just shed few pounds off of his waist, The Earl, soon started moving the ball away and into the batsmen. He soon had Gandhi (their most explosive batsmen who seems to be playing for all the teams in the Berkshire league) caught by the Skipper. Sin and Crinners both kept the opposition batsmen under check which led to the run-out of their number 2 batsman. Crinnion bowling a great line and probing the batsmen soon got his first wicket with a great inswinging delivery. Having bowled a ball that was hit for a boundary on the off side, Sin followed it by a great inswinging delivery to rattle the top of leg stump. Gujjar then arrived at the crease to face 2 balls from Sin that almost saw him back in the hutch. Tom managed to get his fingers to it but couldn't hold on to it (a difficult chance).
Captain then decided to take things into his own hands brought himself to bowl and started with a great first over. Nirav took over from Sin and got his victim in the second ball of his first over. By this time, Gujjar started to see the ball like a football and started playing some great shots. Finners and Nirav bowled a tight line but Gujjar was unstoppable. Nirav got close to getting Gujjar caught on the boundary ropes. The skipper got some hope back into the game by removing Sid Sainani who managed to add 25 runs batting alongside Gujjar. Bainsey too came close to getting Gujjar bowled but the ball just sniffed the stumps. Crinnion came back to bowl his second spell and got another wicket but by then it was too late as Gujjar was unstoppable.
The highlight for Crows was Tom's batting. He played some beautiful shots and kept hitting boundaries in every over.
The news of Aran claiming his 500 wickets was being shown on Sky Sports which got some smiles back on the Crows players who otherwise had a very tough day at the office.
