Woodley v Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club League 1st XI on Sat 05 Aug 2017 at 1:00 pm
Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Won by 5 wickets
Match report
Match report v Woodley
On a damp day in Woodley, skipper Outram won the toss and elected to bowl first knowing that the first half of the game would see a rain delay as a large storm loomed on the horizon.
With this in mind, Woodley got off to a flying start, taking close to 20 runs from the first two overs. Unrattled, the wily partnership of Jeff and Sin stuck to their lengths and were rewarded; Sin trapping the pinch hitter LBW and Jeff drawing an extravagant drive which was well held by Trig at 2nd slip. Shortly after, the evergreen Ravi Godbole replaced Sin and from the outset bowled a line perfectly suited to the conditions. The ball after Woodley’s umpire had been told off for being on his phone at square leg Ravi laid his claim to Jeff’s moniker and produced an absolute jaffa, swinging one way and seaming the other, to displace only the off-bail of the Woodley number four. From the other end, Outram called upon the offies of the Colonel who, in partnership with Ravi, kept it tight and made regular breakthroughs as the Woodley middle order attempted to hit their way out of the pressure they were creating for themselves. A decent partnership for the 7th wicket took their total towards 150 but Ravi came back on to clean up the tail, claim his 5fer and find himself stranded on 599 wickets in his illustrious career. All eyes on his return to the first team at Woodcote in a weeks time. The Colonel ended up with 3 well taken wickets. As a unit, the Crows fielded cleanly, caught well and maintained high levels of pressure and intensity throughout the Woodley innings.
Openers Trig and the Colonel strode out to the middle not too weighed down by a sparse tea offering and immediately applied the pressure on the Woodley old ball. Having played himself in against a few overs of spin, the new ball was flying off the legendary blade of the Trig fine 7th grade professional test-match level D&P bat – available from all good cricket stores. The Colonel played around one and got bowled after a decent opening stand. The man they call the Colonel specifically told number 3 Davies not to play the same shot as him however the very next over he did exactly that, suffering the same fate and leaving a messy pile of stumps and bails behind as he departed. Man of the moment Dan Cartledge, nearing his 1000th run of the season strode confidently to the crease but got a very good ball early on which uprooted his off stump. At this point the Crows were three for not many and under a bit of pressure. Trig continued to his first 50 for the club, earning a baggy green. It was an innings of clean hitting off the front and back foot under pressure. Following Trig’s dismissal, Will Avrili played a responsible innings steering the Crows home and ending up on 27 not out and Hajji ran hard between the wickets, constantly keeping both the Woodley fielders and his batting partner on their toes. In the end it was quite appropriate that the Woodley bowling performance finished on 5 wides. It was erratic, however at times the Crows batsmen were under pressure from the two Woodley quicks.
Overall, an excellent, efficient performance from the Crows away to a team that is capable of destructive cricket on their day.
