Match report Crows wilt in the heat with defeat to Woodcote

Crowthorne & Crown Wood 1st XI threw away a great start to slide to a disappointing defeat at home to Woodcote, despite the customary brilliant innings from Shak. Losing the toss, returning skipper Nick Outram was asked to bat first.

The first half of the innings was all Crows, as Ant Cluett and Jules opened up very well against the Woodcote seamers. Ant especially was in great form, finding the straight boundaries and out-scoring Jules. The onlooking Shak was so surprised with this, he asked all “What did Ant have to eat today, something spicy?”. (QOTD). Ant (24) was undone by a good ball from Pearson to bring the in-form Shak to the crease and the innings looked in great shape. The dismissal of Jules for a well-made 22 sparked a hideous collapse. Baz and Nick were caught behind without scoring, Haji top edged a leg-side delivery and Ravi spanked a full toss to mid-off. Shak was furious as all we had to do was support him, and a Shak ton and a huge score was there for the taking. Shak succumbed to the pressure for 65 and the innings was toast, 153 all out, Rajesh scoring 10 not out at the end.

A wonderful tea from Mrs. Jules followed (finger sandwiches, pork products, fruit platter and three cakes) and Crows attempted to defend the total. A few early signs were bright, with Lennard chancing his arm a bit. After a sharp chance dropped off MacDonald, Jules made amends snaffling a lovely catch at gully dismissing the star batsman off “The Earl”. Sin then claimed another wicket mainly thanks to Chris Allwright, the keeper throwing down the stumps of the no. 3. Jules had actually spotted the batsmen wandering the previous ball and told Chris not be afraid of having a go – which he duly did! Unfortunately for Crows, Mayo and Lennard then batted well for a large part of the innings, absorbing the misbehaving ball and dispatching the poor balls for four. Ant got Lennard lbw, but Gordon came in and did the same as his teammates, hitting the boundaries regularly. Woodcote reached the target 4 wickets down.

A shame as a win would have really set the Crows up near the top of the table. We have to redouble our efforts next week against Peppard, without Shak.
