Match report Great British Leg-break Off: Crows 1s whisk past Welford Park

Crowthorne & Crown Wood 1st XI made the long journey into deepest Berkshire, to the home of the Great British Bake Off, and returned with a victory, rising like yeasted bread towards the top of the Berkshire League Premier Division.

The two captains were helped out to the square on a very stiff breeze which was to blow across the hilltop pitch all day. Skipper Jeff Cluett won the toss, and as is a bowlers wont, chose to bowl first on an evenly baked looking pitch which definitely did not have a soggy bottom. Crows were a man short for the first hour, as star batsman Shak was detained on company business. Either that, or he is living up to his billing as Wokingham's least punctual taxi driver.

Jeff Cluett struck first in trapping the Welford opener lbw early on. This brought out Will Herrington, one of the better batsmen in the league. His time in the oven was brought to a premature end as Cluett deceived him with a Bake-off-cutter which was inside-edged back onto his stumps. Razz Shaik was struggling with lines early as the wind turned his in-swingers into leg side deliveries. But he served up a sugary bun which the number four could only smash to Anthony Cluett, taking a fine catch above his head, clasping it like it was his last pancake before lent. The best fielder in the team (Sinith Chandran, for the avoidance of doubt) was then brought into the attack to serve up his version of lemon meringue pies. Myers could scarcely believe the lbw decision that was won by Chandran. Hutchinson fell to a masterplan of Cluett’s, with sticky-bun hands Cartledge cunningly positioned in the leg side to take a fine catch. Herrington Snr. and Yahia then set about rescuing the collapsing soufflé of an innings, putting on a sticky-toffee stand before Ant Cluett, bowling deftly with the wind, brought Herrington’s resistance to an end. Yahia continued to find boundaries and brought up a good 50. Razz then Yorkie-bar’d Griffith, and all that was left was the icing on the cake; A marvellous run out from Chef Brundish, who ran round the back of the infield tree and mid-on and unleashed a flat throw to the bowlers end to run out the number 10. Welford were roulade-over for 152. Will Avrili had an excellent day behind the stumps in tricky conditions.

An uninspiring tea followed, and debutant Adam Trigwell went out to bat with Ant Cluett. Welford wisely took the old ball, as the pitch was taking spin. Cluett and Trigwell carefully negotiated the first few overs before Trigwell showed what his company bats can do by hitting three sixes and four fours in a fine debut innings of 39. The amazingly nicknamed “Spindarella” trapped Cluett lbw to bring in-form Shak to the crease. Trigwell then unfortunately fell to the deep square boundary when all bets were on him securing a baggy green on debut. Cartledge joined Shak and some absolutely sub-key-lime boundaries from both batsmen propelled the Crows to their target before Cartledge departed the Bake-Off tent for 15, bringing fellow goblet Brundish to the crease. Brundish was intent on getting the game finished early, Battenburging the ball to the boundary, including a lip-smacking six over long-on. The Welford Park spinners bowled well but support for them was a little short in the pace-stry department. Shak was now Paul Hollywooding, dealing in boundaries, and the end came quickly, the Crows surpassing the Welford Park score for the loss of three wickets, Shak finishing not out on 61 and Mary Berry-Brundish 27*.

A good team effort from the Crows, showing the proof is in the pudding of some good pre-season work and momentum building nicely for the coming games.
