Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Sunday 1st XI v ICL/Fujitsu on Sun 22 May 2016 at 1:30 pm
Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Lost by 30 runs
Match report
The youth shine again as sunday captain causes crows to crash to calamitous defeat.
Once again the Crowthorne youth players put their elders to shame in a close game at St Sebastians.
Mackenzie won the toss on a damp slow wicket and elected to bowl first and it looked the correct decision as ICL/fujitsu were 1 run for 3 wickets in the 3rd over. The maverick Mackenzie took the unconventional (some may say completely crazy) decision to take off his two opening bowlers after only 2 overs each, and brought on Aran and Aaron (long and lewington) The latter being very unlucky not to take 2 wickets on his debut as Shaw dropped two dollies at cover.
Billy Coles, bowling his best spell for the club eventually made the next break through, taking two wickets (for 19 off 6 overs.) while Tom Crocker at the other end bowled an accurate spell of swing bowling, (6 overs for 23 runs) Followed by possibly the widest age range of any bowling pair in Crows history; with Mcdowell(72) taking a wicket and Taylor(12)taking another two for only 22 runs.
Mackenzie came on and bowled well taking 1 for 9 off his two, but wilted under pressure from Brundish who begged his way back to bowl two sloppy overs for 24 at the end, to allow the opposition to post a score of 154, when they had previously looked unlikely to get past 50.
In attempting to manufacture a game,Mackenzie had only managed to put his team under real pressure.
The reply started well with Cartledge(26 from 56 balls)and Shaw looking solid, and when Shaw went for 15, Brundish came out to blast another classy Sunday knock, of 45 in 45 balls. It wasn't enough though, and when the goblet brothers were out the tail began to look very long indeed with 4 further wickets falling in 4 overs.
There followed possibly the dullest period of cricket ever seen at St Sebastians, as Long, Crocker, Coles and Mcdowell(9 n.o off 41) blocked away, scoring just 8 runs in 12 overs, causing the scorer to fall asleep, while the skipper, at number 11, waited frustrated on the boundary.
When Coles finally fell in the 37th over(after probably his best batting performance for the club) Mackenzie strode to the crease with the impossible task of scoring 40 off 18 balls, but had a go anyway, pushing the score up to 124 before the overs ran out and the visitors clinched victory.
Speaking to the gathered press after the game, Mackenzie took full responsibility for the defeat, saying "In hindsight maybe we should have gone for the jugular early on, and that's all down to me. the game could have been finished in an hour, but none of the youth players would have got the valuable experience they are here for. Hopefully the overs, and batting practice they all got will pay dividends later in the season."
When asked if this was a moral victory for the crows, he replied, "I guess so, but to be honest it leaves a bitter taste in the mouth, and I'd much rather have had an actual victory, any day. I can only try to put it right next week."
