Twyford & Ruscombe v Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Sunday XI on Sun 19 Jun 2016 at 2:00 pm
Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Won by 7 wickets

Match report Crows triumph in Twyford.

Cartledge and Baines' belligerent batting bamboozles and batters boys from Twyford and Ruscombe.

Mackenzie won the toss in a timed game and elected to bowl first.

The opening overs saw some wayward bowling from both openers, with Brundish initially struggling with length, and Cartledge, who had an attack of the yips bowling some of the widest wides ever seen in Berkshire cricket. Between the wides, short ones, long hops and byes was the odd straight one, or length delivery which invariably took wickets and the opposition were 51 for 5 after 11 overs with neither team quite knowing how. O'Clarke came on as first change with the Limerick Lightning taking two more wickets, and should have had 3 but the skipper dropped one, backing away from one that was smashed straight at him at cover, in a shameful display of cowardice. Manning took another one and they were 90 for 7 after 19 overs and in huge trouble. Batsmen 9 and 10 had other ideas though and proceeded to settle things down despite some good bowling from the youthful pair of Taylor and Wilson, before accelerating at the end. Mcdowell MBE finally removed Downes, then shortly after that, Rodgers, desperate to get away from the bowling of Mackenzie, was shambolically run out by the veteran Hackett and the innings was over, Twyford posting 172 with extras top scoring with a half century.

The Crows innings started in familiar fashion, with Shaw playing around a straight one, and despite some nice batting from Manning and Brundish (27) they were 51 for 3 after 9 overs and staring down the barrel. There followed the most destructive crows batting partnership seen for many a year, as Cartledge and Baines proceeded to take the Twyford attack apart. 4 followed 6,followed 4, despatched to all corners of the ground with clinical efficiency. With rain on the horizon the two batsmen made the timed format irrelevant and smashed the remaining 122 runs in only 17 overs, winning the game as the rain started and leaving Twyford utterly bemused and befuddled.

Talking to the press after the game, skipper Mackenzie paid tribute to the Crowthorne heroes of the day, saying "That was a very special performance by them both. You expect that sort of thing from Cartledge, but it was Baines who really impressed and seemed to flourish under the calming influence of the more experienced batsman. Ive never seen anything like it, and nor had the opposition."
