Match report Battling Crows boys bashed at Bracknell

Crows won the toss and elected to bat.

A young crows team, bereft of half of its regulars, due to an unofficial and non league sanctioned game at st sebs, took to the wicket at Bracknell, relying heavily on the top 3 for runs. They got off to a solid start, Davies and Brundish both got themselves in, and looked solid, only to succumb, spooning easy catches to the fielders. Baines came and went for 13, Hardy for 2, and the innings was already in the balance. There was no let up with the bowling as changes brought more good bowling and the runs dried up even further. Golding battled away, and Mackenzie came to the crease in the 23rd over and they steadied the ship, both working hard to get a foothold back in the game. Some classy boundaries from the skipper aside the scoring was slow, and the overs were running out. Golding eventually went, and nice cameos from Liam and Mikey followed, while Mackenzie played a real captains innings to hold things together, sticking around till the end and top scoring on 29 n.o.
While they had done well to get to 40 overs from where they had been at the half way mark, the total of 129 always looked a little short of par.

The Youthful crows teams average age was only taken into the 20s by the skipper and Dave Hawkes, The Fagin figure to this young bunch of street urchins and ragamuffins, many of whom he had coached through the ranks himself. They took to the field with the confidence of youth, ready to battle for every run.

Bracknell had other ideas, and opener Winter set about the bowling from the off, smashing a belligerent 85 after being dropped in the 30s, and despite Davies taking wickets at the other end the score raced towards 100. When Davies eventually got his man, there weren't enough runs left to play with and despite some superb 1 handed catching from Coles, and more wickets from Ben Hawkes and Storey, Bracknell got to the total with 5 wickets down, and 19 overs to spare. Even a sombrero wearing wicket keeper couldn't put them off.

Mackenzie, talking to the press after the game was keen to praise his young team. "I thought the youngsters were superb out there today, there was a great spirit and we never gave up. It was pleasing personally to score some runs, but id exchange them all to get the win for these boys. But we pick selves up, and go again next week."
