Peppard Stoke Row v Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club League 1st XI on Sat 22 Aug 2015 at 1:00 pm
Match was Drawn (losing draw)

Match report A below-strength CCWCC ended their succession of late season losses with a satisfying and well fought draw at Peppard Stroke Row, in a game played with great spirit thanks to the sporting example set by host captain Paddy Hennessy. Traffic problems had meant the journey from Crowthorne to Peppard doubled in time, and the captains and umpires agreed to delay the start by 15 minutes. CCWCC still started the game with 8 men on the field but it was a very sporting gesture from the home side. The players in the CCWCC side who stepped up from the 2nd and 3rd XI can be very proud of their performances, they everything they were asked of and more.

PSR may have regretted the decision to bat first, however, as a green-top wicket provided early seam movement. Veteran Ravi Godbole was the main beneficiary as first he got one to cut back in to Lamprecht, fresh from a big hundred, LBW offering no shot. The home skipper Hennessy was next, edging to keeper Allwright, shortly follwed by debutant Fergus Nutt. It could have been worse had Godbole managed to change direction more quickly and take a chance offered up by Watts on his first ball. But it was not to be as Dan Hayden joined Andy Watts in a 106 run partnership. Watts was the foil to Hayden's howitzer, the young batsman dispatching balls all over the park with great timing and power. CCWCC were up to 11 players but couldn't stop the flow of runs from one end - Jeff Cluett was tying up the pavilion end with a succession of maidens. The introduction of off-spin accounted for Watts for a patient 47, snaffled by keeper Allwright off Rob Crook. Crook then had the dangerous Rich Ashton caught at square leg. Ashley Hayden, Hopper and Sampson all perished trying to up the scoring rate to Godbole, who had retuned and claimed 6-43. Hayden finally succumbed to Crook (3-44) for an excellent 92 and deserved a ton. PSR racked up 206, just about par on the track and fast outfield.

After a fine tea CCWCC's reply started well. A battling opening partnership by Allwright and Izzadeen looked to have laid a solid foundation for a successful chase. Izzadeen looked class playing off the back foot through the off-side, and Allwright punished anything too full by hitting straight and long. The opening partnership was worth 85 when a the seventh bowler to be used, Wynand Lamprecht bowled Allwright for 46. The wily bowling off Lamprecht claimed Mahroof first ball, and after Godbole was run out, the big hitters Charman and Jeff Cluett fell to Lamprecht in identical fashion, both caught and bowled, sandwiched by Izzaddeen (42), adjudged LBW. Captain Ant Cluett (27) and Rob Crook then attacked, but once Crook had departed for a big hitting 20,again to Lamprecht, the run chase was called off. the final total of 184-8 giving PSR the winning draw. Lamprecht took 6-53 in a fine spell off spin bowling.

A fine game of cricket played in the right spirit between two pretty evenly matched sides on a cracking day!
