Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Won By 3 Wickets

Match report The battle of the top two teams went the way of Crowthorne & Crown Wood CC in a thrilling contest at Sulhamstead.

Sulhamstead won the toss and chose to bat on a surface and outfield that looked like it would yield runs. But the CCWCC bowlers did a great job in bowling disciplined lines, and with the excellent ground fielding Sulhamstead found runs hard to come by. Jeff Cluett, captain for the day, snaffled the first wickets with a smart caught and bowled and a extracting a leg side tickle to see the back of Belcher and Thompson. Briggs then had to retire after a ball clattered into his unmentionables, with overtones of a similar injury in the previous fixture between these teams, when Murray was carted off to A&E. Briggs however was able to continue later. Shakeel Arshad extracted bounce from a placid pitch to bounce out Hafeez, and fine catch held by Ashley Fowles over his shoulder at square leg. The regular drip of wickets continued with a well set Seward giving Fowles a well deserved wicket, and then Outram taking a tough catch to get rid of the dangerous Mercer. At 108-8 Ian Willimas and Matt Gill dragged Sulhamstead's innings to respectability with an excellent counter attack. Williams (29) particularly drove the ball with power to take Sullies to 152 all out. Wickets were shared around With all the bowlers earning credit for their performance.

The CCWCC response started so well, with Barron and Izzadeen looking composed. Izzadeen went with the score on 67. With Barron serenely nearing his half century the next wicket channel the complexion of the game. Outram powerfully drove the ball back to bowler Matt Gill, whose boot deflected the ball back onto the non-stickers stumps. Barron was out of his ground and the unlucky dismissal sparked Sully into life. A change of ends roused Doug Macdonald. Bowling fast and straight, he decimated the middle order, taking 4-3 in a 6 over spell. The maverick Mohammed Careem again came to CCWCC's rescue with an amazing innings of 38 not out, finding the boundary with ease where others had failed with some unorthodox shot making. The tense chase was completed with 7 wickets down, the even contest having ultimately swung CCWCC's way. Macdonald ended with 4-25 and almost won the game for Sulhamstead.

Hard fought and played in good spirit (mostly!) this was a game befitting of a top two clash. Sulhamstead must now hope the CCWCC slip up in one of their remaining games, the destiny of the title firmly in CCWCC's hands.
