Woodley v Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club League 1st XI on Sat 06 Jun 2015 at 1:30 pm
Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Won by 223 runs
Match report
A second wicket stand of 229 between Richard Barron and Nick Outram was the highlight of an emphatic victory for Crowthorne & Crown Wood CC 1st XI over Woodley 1st XI, who had started in second place in the Premier table, but were replaced by CCWCC by the end of the day.
Woodley inserted CCWCC, hoping to use the windy conditions to good effect. Shakeel Arshad and Richard Barron opened the innings, Arshad particularly aggressive in the stand, taking advantage of a lightning fast outfield and short-ish boundaries. He raced to 40 with impressive shots before Kashif Ali pitched one up and tempted the drive, a thick edge pouched in the slips. At this stage Barron had contributed a minority of the 61 runs and looked a little scratchy, with Ali bowling some good, fast, swing bowling and Mohammed Rafeeq bowling some lovely dipping off-spin. But the introduction of Nick Outram at number 3 changed things, as he and Barron first soaked up some pressure and then exploded into a scoring frenzy. Barron was dropped at gully before reaching 50, and hit a six in the same over, and together with Outram they started to hit the bowlers out of the attack. Woodley's heads dropped and their fielding suffered. CCWCC's 100-150 came up in what seemed like a few minutes. The tone after drinks was set by Outram hitting a straight six he ball onto the pavilion roof first ball. He was then somewhat starved of the strike as Barron scored runs at will, powerfully hitting the ball through the on-side and passing first 100 and then 150 with ease. With the score on 290, Barron on 154 and the partnership having reached 229, Barron was run out by a marvellous piece of fielding from Shaukat, throwing down the stumps whilst on the ground having dived to stop the ball. Some wickets fell in the pursuit of some quick runs when captain Anthony Cluett called an end to the Woodley nightmare after 42 overson 330-5. Outram had unselfishly agreed to the declaration despite being unbeaten on 90, ten short of his maiden CCWCC ton.
With such a daunting total CCWCC were able to pack the slips and to their credit Woodley tried to be positive from the start. Rafeeq was the first to depart tamely at gully. Asif then went to a scorching catch by Rob Crook again in the gully, taking a hard-swung edged drive above his head one handed. Aamir Iqbal hung around for a long time but watched a succession of partners depart, Alex Sykes bowling with speed and aggression to take 3-19 in the middle order. CCWCC's catching and fielding was impressive, Crook, Murray and Outram taking a trio of very good catches to further deflate Woodley. Jeff Cluett came back after a fine opening spell to take Iqbal's wicket and finish with 3-34. Captain Anthony Cluett tidied up the tail to finish with 3-18 and seal a resounding victory for the Crows.
