Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club League 1st XI v West Reading on Sat 02 May 2015 at 1:00 pm
Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Won by 3 wickets

Match report Crowthorne & Crown Wood 1st XI began their first season as a combined side in the Premier Division with a tense and thrilling victory against pre-season favourites West Reading 1st XI.

West Reading chose to bat first and set off with confidence, with Adam Davidson looking composed and Kazam Kamal punishing anything too full, mostly choosing to go aerial. Opening bowlers Jeff Cluett and Ashley Fowles were both unlucky not to find an edge. CCWCC got the breakthrough they desperately needed on 69 when Kamal, shortly after being dropped, hit Angus Murray to long-on, Jeff Cluett taking a steepling catch. What followed was a dramatic collapse, as Rahim Khan went lbw to the 6'8" antipodean Murray without scoring and Davidson, one of the league's best batsmen, inexplicably hit a Murray long-hop straight to point. Worse was to follow for Wests, when Alex Sykes caught the classy Zafar Ali on the crease with one that nipped back. Ali was fresh from a great century the previous week. Sultan Khan middled a bouncer to a nicely taken catch by Fowles on the deep square boundary. CCWCC had Wests at 95-6, then 130-7. Mubin Ahmed and Sherry Tariq provided real substance to the innings with an unbroken 61 partnership for the 8th wicket to lift Wests to a respectable final total of 191-7. Murray took 4-46 on his league debut, just failing to capture his fifth wicket. Sykes took 3-37 off 12 overs and Fowles was unlucky not to take a wicket in his 10 overs, conceding only 26 runs.

CCWCC's innings started disastrously with last season's productive openers Richard Barron and Shakeel Arshad back in the hutch with only 14 on the board. Nick Outram, at 3, looked in really good touch, finding the middle of the bat regularly on his way to 34, and it was a surprise when he edged Sherry Tariq to the wicket-keeper. At this point Tariq was bowling the best of any bowler in the match, getting considerable outswing and seam movement. With the departure of captain Anthony Cluett, Ravi Godbole and Alex Sykes set up the CCWCC chase with a gritty partnership. With Tariq bowling frequent unplayable deliveries (ultimately finishing with 2-48 off 12 very good overs), scoring was limited to one end, but the two took the score beyond 100 before Godbole was the 5th wicket to fall after scoring a much-needed 41. Jeff Cluett fell early, to allow the definitive partnership to be formed when 'keeper Azza Mahroof joined Sykes. Together, with a mixture of stout defence and audacious hitting, they took CCWCC to the brink of a tense victory. Mahroof played cuts, slog sweeps and leg deflections for a very classy 38 until he hit a full toss straight to mid-wicket with only 7 runs needed. With Sykes still there on a marvellous 54 not out, all that was left was for Rob Crook to hit the winning runs and spark celebrations in the CCWCC camp.
