Pirbright v Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Sunday 1st XI on Sun 20 Sep 2015 at 1:00 pm
Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Won by 117 runs
Match report
CROWS CRUSH PIRBRIGHT TO END SEASON ON HIGH
Sunday Crows finished off the season in some style with a convincing 117 run win in the traditional end of season game at Pirbright. Without inspirational skipper, Mackenzie to rally the troops, it looked a tough task at first.
Sent into bat on what looked like a tricky track, Baines and Brundish made a solid start before Baines lost his mind temporarily and spooned an easy catch to point. Biggles Golding departed soon enough for a duck and this bought new boy Jon Prior to the crease. He and Brundish nudged and nurdled to tick the score along before Prior eventually succumb.
In strode Daniel Cartledge, Sunday Batsman of the year and with about 7 50's in a row to his name. Two balls later out Strode Daniel Cartledge for 0.
The Crows were struggling with tough conditions and some tight bowling. But Cometh the hour, cometh the men. Legendary all-rounders Long and Storey steadied the ship with a 50 partnership with some hard running which clearly looked to be taking it's toll on Long in particular.
They pushed Crows to a decent total before both perishing leaving Dave Shaw and John Cartledge to push the score over the 150 mark. Stand-in skipper came to the crease for the final couple of overs, staring down the barrel of the duck prize. After a couple of suicidal attempts to get off the mark, he finally tickled on to fine leg to condemn a deserved Baines to the award.
After a hearty tea (7/10)and at least one player suffering from a bad hangover, the Crows took the field for the final time in 2015 knowing the depth of their bowling resources would be a tough test for Pirbright.
Wickets tumbled right from the off with Kieran Golding topping off a fine season with a couple of wickets and wily campaigner John Cartledge winkling 3 out at the other end.
Pirbright were 5 down at drinks and in a lot of trouble. Pat Golding replaced Cartledge at the Pavilion end and Partridge replaced Kieran at the Duck Pond end and Pirbright's demise was fairly swift thereafter.
A brief cameo with the ball from Brundish put the final nail in the coffin and the Crows had sealed a convincing victory with best part of 20 overs to spare.
Stand-in skipper Partridge faced a barrage of questions from the gathered media afterwards. "I'm really pleased that we have come here today and rounded off the season in style. We batted sensibly and made a decent total on a tough track. In the absence of Brendon, I'm pleased that we've managed to get to a 50% win ratio for the season." When pushed on his own future, Partridge remained tight lipped on rumours that he may be ready to hang up his spinning finger. "All I CAN say is that now I've reached that magical milestone of 350 wickets it's time to reflect on 11 long years of playing every week. It's always nice to end on a high here at Pirbright and it wraps up another great season for the club."
