Eversley v Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Sunday 1st XI on Mon 04 May 2015 at 1:00 pm
Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Lost by 115 runs
Match report
Enjoyable game of cricket, ruined by player with ability.
for the 2nd time in 3 years our traditional bank holiday Monday fixture away at Eversely was spoiled by them fielding a player who could bat.
The crows took to the field, following in the footsteps of some of the greats of world cricket; To the list of Marshall, Greenidge, Gower, RA Smith, Shane Warne and Cardigan Adolphus Connor, we could now add the names of Hester, Cluett, Mackenzie, Murray, Sykes and Clarke.
Bouyed by the news that Eversley only had one decent batsman, Mackenzie was pleased when he lost the toss and was put in to bowl. The crows took to the field at a packed Eversley, with about a hundred cars foolishly parked around the boundary edge for the classic car festival at the frog and wicket pub.
An early wicket brought county youth player Thompson to the crease and he went about the bowling from the very start, with 6 after 6 disappearing over the rope. Monty's figures started with two maiden overs, but he had to be removed from the attack, demoralised and depressed after 40+ runs were struck from his next 3. Murray entered the fray and got a measure of control back, but in truth all of the bowlers, with the exception of Sykes, who took 3 wickets, & including some our 1st team stars, got the same treatment. Several of the parked cars were hit, and one windscreen was smashed as balls rained down into various car parks. Wickets tumbled regularly at the other end, with Manning bowling well in a long spell, and O'Clarke being the pick of the rest but none of that mattered with Thompson Teeing off at the other end. He was dropped on 20, and again 3 times during the afternoon, and when Eversley declared with 4 overs to go he had passed 200, out of a total of 297.
Staring down the barrel of another defeat, Mackenzie looked around the dressing room for a hero and up stepped Shaw and Murray, The crows innings started brilliantly as Shaw went for 0 again, but that only brought J. Cluett to the crease and he immediately began smashing sixes of his own. The Crows raced past 50 before Murray went. Sykes came in and gave good, if brief, support at the other end . Then came a run of more ducks, including the hapless skipper, and it looked like the crows may be skittled for under 100, but an unlikely hero strode to the crease, refusing to be cowed by the pressure of the match situation. Marshall 'monty' 'the Don' Miller played doggedly at the other end, while Cluett swept majestically to his century, and when Cluett finally succumbed on 110 (says 106 in the book? ed.), the diminutive tail ender even started to open up, hitting a succession of 4s of his own.
R.P Hester joined him at the wicket, and freed from the shackles of captaincy, looked a totally different player, playing a variety of positive shots before criminally running himself out, going for a 2 that was never on, while Miller stood bemused in his crease. Monty went soon after as the innings finally collapsed, with the crows all out for 182.
If Thompson had been dismissed for 20, as he should have been, we would have won this game, but in the end all we were left with was a moral victory, and moral victories were no good to Mackenzie as his leadership took the Sunday crows to their second heavy defeat in a row by more than 100 runs.
Speaking to reporters after the game a clearly exasperated Skipper struggled to come to terms with the result. "We played well, and I was pleased with our attitude in the field. The lads' heads never dropped, perhaps because they spent so much of the game watching balls sail past above them, but too many catches were dropped, and that is where this game was lost. Thompson played very well and looks a great player, but we should have had him on 20, and that would have changed the game."
When asked if he was worried about his future as captain, Mackenzie replied, "That's up to the selectors, I don't pay any attention to all the negativity and rumours. All I can do is get my head down, work hard to pick everybody up and try to win the next game."
A good sentiment, but in truth, the vultures must already be circling and he has a tough job on his hands to pull this season out of the mire.
