Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club League 2nd XI v Shinfield on Sat 21 Jun 2014 at 1:30 pm
Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Lost by 1 wicket
Match report
Crowthorne and Crown Wood just missed out on a first win in their 'home' game against Shinfield 1st XI at Shinfield rec.
Losing the toss and asked to bat on a green and lively wicket under the hot sun, Tham got things off to a good start by launching one into the tennis courts, to the displeasure of the racquet wielding ladies, and into a farmers field never to be seen again. Up the other end skipper Luke had less luck, seeing his off stump uprooted for a goldie. This brought Chris Allright to the crease and he proceeded to show how league cricket sometimes needs to be played with a brilliant innings of 58. Chris came to the crease to face the second ball of the 2nd over and did not depart until the third ball of the 41st.
Seven men came and went whilst Chris occupied and accumilated, the pick of the partnerships coming with Dan Boulton who showed his class with a knock of 41 on a tricky pitch against some quality seam bowling, particularly from Shashank Garg. Garg was to prove the scourge of the middle and lower order, gaining extravagent movement to finish his 12 overs with 5-21.
The fall of Allright brought in no. 11 John Cartledge to partner no. 10 Raj Mann with the score on 148 and an ambition to reach 150 and an extra batting point. Raj had other ideas though and blasted his way to 28 not out and the score onto 182, ably assisted by the cool head of JC at the other end and some energy saving strolls between the wickets to get back on strike. An excellent final wicket partnership led Crows to a highly competitive score.
Crowthorne & Crown Wood took to the field with the old ball, Sin and Bainsey looking for the early breakthrough. Both bowled well but without luck, Sin could have had the skipper Dear caught behind but sportingly called him back as ball came off his box and apparently no-where near his bat. Shinfield's professional Yorkshireman Terry played some particularly ugly hoiks across the line, a theme throughout the Shinfield batting order.
It took the new ball to make the breakthrough, Dan Crinnion taking out two of the top three, helped by an excellent catch in the covers by the skipper. Raj dispatched Terry back to the pavilion in a tight spell attacking the stumps, perhaps one too many drifting down to fine leg for Sin's liking who ended up in cramped-up heap.
Crows kept among the wickets, Sheppard took a smart catch backwards over his shoulder to dismiss Garg off Dan Cartledge's bowling, Dan and John Cartledge took catches to keep the wickets column ticking over and when Sheppard had the limpit like Nasser trapped LBW Crows were right in the game.
In the end it was the hard hitting Mathur who was to take Shinfield over the line, another who's favourite area was in the air between square leg and cow corner. With 6 needed to win and one wicket remaining Mathur played a trademark high pull to deep square leg off the bowling of JC. Dan Crinnion grabbed the ball brilliantly out of the air but just too far over his head to remain balanced in the field of play, the 6 runs giving Shinfield victory by one wicket.
