Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club League 3rd XI v West Reading 3 on Sat 05 Jul 2014 at 1:30 pm
Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Won by 87 runs
Match report
An excellent win for the 3rds against West Reading.
We lost the toss and were put into bat, which meant we lost any chance of watchin Argentina v Belgium on our impressive new plasma. However Alaister Knox, Mike Storey and Sean Clarke may have had different ideas as they got out for 2 runs between them and very quickly. This brought the returning Morgan Kemp to the crease and he certainly made the difference, smashing 119 and forming good partnerships with Tom Nash who made 34, Alistair Warner-Rowley who made 30, and 13 year old debutant Sunny Sunwar who made 13, and looked very useful. Aran Long and myself barely bothered the scorers, Aza making 2, and I got my first duck in 20 years.
We were left in the luxurious position of being able to declare and with 9 wickets down and 40 overs gone, i made the decision to call the batsmen in with Nigel Payne only 42 runs short of his 50.
we all enjoyed a very healthy tea, as the opposition were on Ramadan and chose not to eat, but instead pray to the heavens in the hope of getting some sort of result. Plenty more food to go around, and the leftovers were enjoyed by the first and second team as they returned from their matches later that evening.
We opened the bowling with the old bowl, using our spin king, Mikey Storey and the very experienced John Cartledge. both bowled very well, with John striking twice in his 5th over. However I had a predetermined plan, and heartlessly removed him from the attack to replace him with Morgan Kemp and Aza Long. The visitors were down to 26 for 4, however they simply were not good enough to get to Aran or Morgans bowling and so chances were few. Runs were not important, they were never going to get to the 235 required, so I sacrificed the miserley Kemp for myself in an attempt to get them to hit out. It worked first ball as Mr Harees played all around one of my nonspinning spinners and lost his offstump. 5 wickets down, 30 overs left, we could taste our first victory.
However the middle order stuck around, they even withstood the confusing pace of Sean O'Clarke. The batting hero Morgan Kemp, even dropped a dolly of the skippers bowling putting his place in jeopardy. Alistair Warner-Rowley made up for it, by taking a great catch of his own bowling to leave the visitors on 82-7. West Reading defended resolutely, in their normal style by whacking ball after ball to cow corner, and eventually Aran Lang struck on 111 for for 7. Malik Tahin played a sensible innings batting at number 5 and staying around, obviously playing for the draw and frustrating us. While he stuck around Mikey Storey bowled Ahmed, and took the 8th wicket. it was tense, but Kemp came on for his second spell, and made up for the dropped catch, by taking the last two with fine catches by Alistair Knox who took 4 catches in the match. it took us 45.3 overs to wrap up the victory, so a good decision to declare.
Obviously a fantastic return for Morgan Kemp, 119 runs, 8.3 overs 3 for 8 and one dropped catch.
Also young Sunny Sunwar played well behind the stumps and batted very soundly on his debut
