Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Sunday 1st XI v Welford Park on Sun 29 Jun 2014 at 2 pm
Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Won by 62 runs
Match report
Crows out play draw mongering Welford Park
Normal Sunday service was resumed, following the last 2 games dubbed by the local media as the Frenzy's fearful fortnight, as skipper RP Hester returned to duty.
Crows lost the toss and were put in. This seemed a bad decision by WP, as we piled on 201 runs in an excellent and measured batting display. The top order, led by Senior debutant Joe Boulton, laid the foundation by accumulating runs at a steady rate. There was a great partnership between Joe and Gordon Hawkes which started to turn the game in our favour. The tail enders then came in, smashing runs all over the place, led by the Colonel and then Jeff with a massive 6 who was sadly caught the next ball. A very cheeky 7 runs in the final over from Barrymore and RP Hester took the score over 200 which seemed like a massive score on a ripper of a pitch.
Tea was a feast of Australasian proportions. Joe's mum providing one of thefinest sights on a cricket field (or just off it). 4 types of homemade cakes and scones to boot! Top effort, Joe will be sadly missed while travelling on 'Le Shuttle'.
Slightly weary from the tea, the Crows came out to defend their total. They started really well, even an uncharacteristically expensive over from Jeff couldn't halt us. Barrymore and Jeff were bowling so tightly that eventually a wicket came, thanks to a rancid long hop from Allwright. He claimed a further 2 wickets while Jeff took a caught and bowled. Welford were 4 down and in all sorts of trouble. Thankfully for the Ian Herrington came out to bat, surely he was going to save the game for them?? Sadly for them though he was obviously under the impression that the draw was available, and so proceeded to increase the run rate even further. When he was eventually caught at slip following some great bowling by Mikey Storey, the game was all but done. 10 an over with only 4 wickets left didn't look likely. The Crows kept going and in the end made it look like an easy victory.
Crows skipper was interviewed by the Daily Sport after (one of their reporters was seen playing tennis!) - 'I'm just delighted with this win. The guys had really lost faith with the defeat last week and me not being here for a fortnight. Our morale was so low, I didn't know where to start to pick the boys up...it was like they all just didn't want to play cricket ever again. But I picked them up and the results were clear for all to see today. Mikey bowled brilliantly, keeping it so tight during a crucial phase of the game and Joe batted with maturity that belied his years'.
When pressed further on the Twyford debacle, the skipper said 'Look, it's not right for me to be pointing fingers. Brendy has taken a lot of stick in the media for that defeat, we deal with those sort of things behind closed doors. I mean, I know he said he was out until 4am, but those CCTV images in the papers are so grainy, it could have been anyone in that picture'
