Match report
Sensational stand-in skipper spearheads sunday success
With sunday skipper Richard Hester away, the Sunday Crows captaincy fell to his vice captain, Brendy 'The Frenzy' Mackenzie, for our long standing home fixture with touring side, Arcadian Casuals.
So keen was he to do well that he even turned up at the ground 2 hours before start of play, meaning a lesiurely start for the rest of the team as all the jobs had been done by the time they arrived at the ground.
The weather was overcast but mild as the two captains took to the field for the toss. The opposition skipper called correctly and promptly fell into Mackenzie's tea based trap, electing to bat first, totally unaware of the feast he had prepared for the interval.
The Game started slowly. Their batsmen intent on seeing off the opening bowlers; Saviour and Monty, who both bowled frugally, but without a breakthrough despite some near misses.
The batsmen started to open up, comfortable now on a decent batting track. The score began to race upwards and the boundaries began to flow, prompting the captain to change things around.
Joe stepped up at first change, spinning the ball both ways and claimed the first wicket. Ball after ball continued to beat the bat from the pavilion end, and 2 more wickets fell to the Ozzie leg spinner. Tham came on at the kilometer end, bowling very tidily and claiming a well deserved wicket in his final over.
With almost every bowling change that followed another wicket fell. First Baines struck, then partridge and Coles,Baines again and two more for partridge. A succession of batsmen returned to the changing room and the Casuals of Arcadia were bowled out for 189, with overs to spare. It was a good turn around, as it had looked at one point that the casuals would easily get past 200.
Part two of Brendy's cunning plan now went into operation, as the opposition were treated to one of the finest teas the new ground has ever seen.
Time and again they returned to the table for seconds, then thirds. Plates piled high they stuffed their faces while mackenzie sat back, quietly chuckling to himself at their naive foolishness.
The Crows were able to eat their fill, then sit back and relax, while the other team took to the field groaning from the sheer weight of food they had consumed.
Dave and Chris allwright opened the batting, and Shaw began to smash the ball all around the (leg side of the) ground from the off.
But while the boundaries flowed from one end, the wickets fell at the other. Allwright, Saviour, Tham and O'clarke all getting out cheaply while Dave raced on to a quickfire 50.
it was 77 for 4 and the game was in the balance when The Frenzy entered the fray, striding to the wicket knowing that only a true captains innings would do if he was to maintain his 100% winning record as skipper.
Mackenzie calmly played himself in with a succession of singles, while Shaw continued to hit out at the other end. eventually he joined the boundary party with a huge 6 and 4 from successive balls, signalling that his eye was now well and truly in.
Dave finally succumbed for 72, bringing Joe to the crease, fresh from his selection for the league representative side last week. But even the mighty Davies was forced to play 2nd fiddle here, and youd have been hard pressed to pick which of these two had recently been chosen as one of the best players in the Berkshire league.
Another massive six followed and more 4s, as one after the other, arcadian casual bowlers were dismissed to the rope. Davies began opening up at the other end, keen not to be overshadowed, and the game raced away from the casuals, leaving them shellshocked and devoid of ideas in the field.
When Mackenzie finally fell, just two short of what would have been his second 50 in his last 3 sunday games and with the crows only 10 short of the winning total, the game was already won.
All that was left was for Bainesy and Davies (41*) to hit off the remaining runs, which they did with the minimum of fuss, Man of the Match Davies ending it all in the 36th over with a mammoth six.
Speaking after the game to local radio journalists, Mackenzie was keen to deflect the praise and attention away from himself; " This win is down to the whole team, not just one superhuman innings.
Everyone contributed today which is the most pleasing thing for me as skipper, and our heads never went down when the score was racing away from us. We kept going and kept their score below 200, and thats what was pivotal to the result." He said modestly. "People will always focus on the spectacular shot making, but for me it is the unsung work of the whole team in the field that enabled our batsmen to play with the freedom they did."
When pushed, he grudgingly commented further on his knock, " yes it was pleasing on a personal basis to play so well, but i really would prefer to focus on what the team as a whole did out there."
a noble sentiment im sure, but it was clear to everyone who saw the game where the real credit was due.
