Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Sunday 1st XI v BBC Caversham on Sun 18 May 2014 at 1.30 pm
Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Won by 3 wickets
Match report
Brendy bashes BBC with brilliant batting bonanza
The sun was out, the pitch looked good, and a crowd had gathered to see some great cricket at St Sebastians for the first weekend home game in this new era of crows cricket.
The toss was lost, and the opposition elected to have a bat and Ant ‘the colonel’ Cluett opened up the bowling, amid a flurry of KFC related punnery.
He switched from spin to seam to take the new ball, and came steaming down the hill from the tennis court end against the perennial blockers from the BBC. It was an impressive spell, and along with Pete Clarke, bowling at the pavilion end, kept the scoring rate very low, with wickets falling at regular intervals.
Mackenzie came on at the first change(a reward for collecting the tea) and promptly tried to ruin the good start that had been made. The scoring rate picked up, and his figures were only rescued with his final ball, a horrible leg side delivery that was skied into the hands of the diving keeper.
The Tipperary terminator- Sean O’Clarke -came on at the other end, turning in a very impressive spell of slow bowling, with maidens and wickets a plenty to undo the damage done by the frenzys 4 overs.
Aran long came on for his one over, (old age dictating he was not able to play a full part in his third game in 5 days) took two wickets. The first was a skyer down to fine leg, with the keeper chasing after it, the skipper took a fine catch over his head while running backwards, capping off a fine display behind the stumps, pouching 4 difficult chances...if only he could bat. The second was a clean bowl A Long classic, who then promptly retired to the outfield, having showed again that while form is temporary, class is most definitely permanent.
Partridge and Davies came on at the end to bamboozle and befuddle the BBC lower order. The twin spin attack cleaning up the remaining wickets in quick time, with the innings finishing on 140.
After tea, Mickey and Joe opened the batting in the full afternoon heat and promptly wilted. Joe Skying an easy catch from a leading edge, with mickey following soon after. Sean O’Clarke took to the field, followed quickly by Mackenzie, and they set about steadying the rocking crows ship with a nice partnership that kept the scoreboard ticking over nicely, before O’Clarke eventually fell to the bowling of Randall.
Mackenzie began to open up as wickets fell at the other end, with short stints at the crease from newly left handed Huelin and Long, eventually bringing Jocelyn to the wicket.
He proved the perfect foil for Mackenzie, with dogged defence and quick running, and the pair built a match winning partnership, with Mackenzie displaying a dazzling array of shots, including some powerful fours straight down the ground, and square of the wicket, as well as a monstrous straight six, before eventually spooning an easy catch to the bowler with a very tired shot on 66 after taking the total over 100 and the game away from the BBC boys.
Hester selflessly lost his wicket quickly for a duck (knowing the padded up Colonel was the most likely candidate to knock off the required runs), leaving Ant to come in to hit off the remaining runs with Jocelyn.
But by that point the damage had been done by the swashbuckling innings from the frenzy, who for once, had lived up to his nickname, after riding his luck early on.
