Twyford & Ruscombe v Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Sunday 1st XI on Sun 22 Jun 2014 at 2 pm
Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Lost by 4 wickets
Match report
Stand in Skipper scuppered in sunday setback
The sunday Crows were away at Twyford and Ruscombe on a hot and stuffy afternoon, to play a timed game on a wicket that looked ok, but held hidden demons for the batsmen.
Things didnt start well for last weeks victorious stand in skipper(who looked a little worse for wear) as he lost the toss, and then mistakenly told his team they were fielding not batting.
That mistake had the two openers, Dave and Bainesy, hurriedly putting their pads on and rushing out to the middle. It didnt seem to affect Shaw, who hit his first ball for 4 but the old war horse, Hackett soon got his revenge as he clean bowled him with his sixth ball. Andrew Baines looked solid at the other end, playing himself in with 1s and 2s, But his new partner Davies got on the wrong end of an LBW decision for 4,and Baines followed in the same manner soon after. With the score on 27 for 3 the crows already looked up against it.
The pitch was doing alot, with variable bounce, movement off the pitch, and in the air. The bowlers were mainly bowling a decent pace, but with wily old campaigner N. Downes bowling his slow and loopy, line and length stuff from the other end.
Batsman after batsman came out to the wicket and returned to the changing room in short time, with only single figures to show for it.
Their bowlers used the pitch well, and the wickets were shared around, with 3 each for Downes senior, and junior.
Nick Mcdonagh and Pete Clarke both looked in good nick, but both got out after getting in, and when millar was out for 0, the total(with extras top scoring on 18) looked a little short of defendable.
The crows commendably didnt allow their heads to go down, they knew the pitch would help them, and they took to the field with great energy and focus.
Millar and Pete Clarke opened the bowling each taking a wicket in their first couple of overs, and bowling very tight spells that limited the batsmens options for playing shots.
The good work was continued at first change. Kieran bowling with good pace and accuracy, and bainesy continuing his good season with the ball at the other end. Stand in wicket keeper Davies took a sharp stumping off the bowling of baines, and kieran was very unlucky not to take a wicket.
The Crows were sharp in the field, keeping the runs down, but they came in dribs and drabs anyway. Mackenzie dropped a catch, but immediately redeemed himself by running out the batsman as he ran to the other end. Baines got another run out and suddenly the Crows looked well in the game.
Sean O'Clarke bowled a very decent 3 overs, beating the bat time and again, but also came away wicketless.
Davies swapped the keepers pads with monty and came on to bowl, taking a wicket, conceding very few runs, and bamboozling batsmen with his leg spin. Brendy took the catch at point, but the next batsmen slowly nocked off the remaining 10 runs to win the game for Twyford, send the Crows home early, and the stand in skipper down to earth with a bump.
Speaking to Sky television after the game, Mackenzie was full of praise for his team. "I was very proud of the way we came out and tried to defend such a low total. even with only 65 on the board, the guys never looked beaten right up to the last ball, everyone showed a great attitude and put in a great shift out there, they were superb to a man."
when asked how he explained the difference in his batting after last weeks heroics. Mackenzie held his hands up, and answered honestly "I was out till 4 am last night. I turned up to play in less than perfect condition, and i was underprepared. id like to apologise to my team mates and the club for my unprofessional behaviour. Thats not how a Crowthorne cricket captain is expected to operate, and if im ever given the chance again, i hope i can make up for it."
Refreshing and commendable honesty, but the words wont lessen the damage done, and recent talk of him taking the full time captaincy will surely be put on the back burner after this.
