Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Crowthorne Midweek XI v Foster Wheeler on Wed 08 May 2013 at 6:00
Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Lost by 6 wickets
Match report
Midweek XI's unbeaten run of almost 2 years came to an end on a dark and damp day on Derby Field. The new pink stumps were shining bright, but the team's batting was almost as dark as the clouds. It was like the numbers round in countdown, 1 big one and 8 small ones please. Unfortunately, the beautiful Rachel Riley wasn't there to put the numbers on the board.
It all started so well. Crows new pop-up gazebo was in action. Apparently takes 2 minutes to put up, but the wind put pay to that. Still, did its job perfectly, and will look good for teas at home matches.
Skipper Sheppard following on from a great lead on Saturday, took the toss, WON!!!, and elected to bat. Out went Davies and Shaw. Couple of pensive balls, then Davies opened up with nothing but evens here on in.
Shaw in his first game of the year was not so steady. He was soon sent back to the pavilion, waddling with his tail between his legs, like he had done for his run out. And so started the practically full order collapse. Only Davies, Clarke and Sheppard made double figures, with only Davies retiring.
Chalmers came in, smashed a 4, then got out. Clarke lasted longer, while Davies retired. Knight barely having stepped foot on the square, was caught dittying. Cluett came in and soon saw Clarke walking back the other way. Clarke had survived 2 drops, but 3rd time no luck, out for 10.
Saunders walked out, then back after a 4. So in came Carson. Fresh from a long bat on Monday, hopes up. Dot, dot, dot, then through the gate quack quack quack went the Mallard back down the freshly trod path to the pavilion.
From 44 for 2 to 59 for 7, a collapse by the Crows. Miller not wanting to play, hid this and stroked a lovely boundary. Lasted a few more balls, then bowled. Partridge only managed a few balls, but took a 4 in that. Cluett had since gone back too. It was left to Sheppard and Davies.
The partnership looked strong. Sheppard hitting 3 boundaries. But then that was it. Bowled Casson, and the Crows were finished on a measly 82. This would be tough to defend.
It was now getting darker, and drizzle had left the ground damp. Crows went out full guns blazing with Chalmers and Cluett hitting the opening pair with all their might. Though very tight, unfortunately, they couldn't break them down. In came Partridge and Miller, keeping it tight and reducing the run rate.
Partridge then took the first wicket, much needed and with a catch from Cluett. Crows hopes were up. But out came big hitting number 3. The change of bowling, Clarke and Saunders couldn't hold him.
Davies and Carson were given the ball. Davies wrapped up the number 3 with a great catch by the skipper on the boundary. Then Carson with his third ball clean bowled the number 4. He celebrated as though he'd won the lottery. Every wicket is important in his book.
Davies then got Crows last wicket of the night, getting the steady opener out caught behind. But Foster Wheeler soon wrapped the match up, and Crows had lost for the first time since June 2011.
Still, next match tonight, so lets turn it round immediately.
