Bradfield 2 v Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Crowthorne Saturday 2nd XI on Sat 03 Aug 2013 at 1:30
Match was Drawn (Losing Draw)

Match report For the second week in a row the 2nds held out for a draw. Great innings by man of the match Tony McDowell saving the team with a half century, with only 3 other batsmen reaching double figures, Pete Clarke the most notable with a great knock of 32no at the end.

Skipper Carson, taking charge for the first time this season strode out to the middle with various ideas in his head, but primarily hoping to bat first to get the option of using the old ball with his slower bowling attack. Unfortunately, the "Tails never fails" plan, which had actually failed every single time for Jimmy, failed again. Bradfield chose to bat first, and put Crows out to pasture.

Plans changed. Now Crows opened with the consistent Clarke bowling from one end, and the request that Shah bowled medium from the other. The offer was "medium or spin", so skipper chose medium. Then after the match Shah owned up to never having bowled medium before.

Anyway, back from the front line (well Germany), and after opening with 3 wides, Shah found the line and length. Taking 3 of the first 4 wickets, lbw for the very slow opener, a catch for Garrett, and a clean bowled. Clarke bowling tight at the other end took the other opener.

At 35-4 off a lot of overs (around 15), Bradfield were probably just hoping to get three figures, and Crows were looking strong. Unfortunately, then the run rate increased. Though the batsman was Bliss, his batting was anything but for Crows.

Swinging at everything, and fortunately for him connecting with a lot, Bliss strode on to top score with 95no. Chances came every over but fell short, long, or narrowly missed the stumps. Ingram and Garrett had spells with the ball. Ingram took the number 3 who'd been around a while, and the number 7 caught by Carson. Garrett got one too, clean bowled. But it felt like the score was running away from them.

So, skip tried his arm. First 2 overs were really tight, 2-0-5-1, but that was it. Still living the dream from those 2 overs, and the odd chance inches from Bliss' off stump, skip stayed on too long, finally going to 41 off 5 overs, with no further break through. He did celebrate the number 9 batsmen like he'd won the ashes though.

Leaving it too late, on came Cluett senior. With the pressure of proving his sons' cricketing ability was from him rather than their mother, he took the ball. Skip soon realised he'd made this decision way too late. Really tight bowling, maiden first over, then wicket last over, Cluett will hopefully be used more wisely next time.

Bradfield had set Crows a big target of 203 to win, however with the fast outfield, this was definitely achievable.

Stent opened with McDowell at the other end. The run rate was good, and took about a third of the time it took Bradfield to reach 35, but then Stent fell. A solid drive was caught inches above the ground by the young bowler. Good catch, but not good for Crowthorne.

Shaw went out, but was soon back run out, having only wafted at one ball, before failing to ground his bat when Tony looked for a quick single. Shaw had had a comical day. Pretty solid in the field, he did have one moment, when he chased a ball that had dropped over his head, bounced up, taken chest height but he couldn't stop before the line. Tried to drop the ball, fell over and threw it over the line. Funny to watch.

Cluett went out. Played some nice strokes, a solid 4, but then fell leg before, for 6. Garrett lived the life of a cat, first ball just dropped short of bowler, second just high of cover, a third through slips hands. He got 6 but then clean bowled.

Shah went out. Sped up the run rate, 3 fours, few singles, but then home too soon, caught on 18. Colin swung, missed, lbw golden. Cook looked good, swept first ball for 4 to the pavilion, nice. But like many before, did not break double figures, clean bowled. Jarrett looked shaky, survived a few scares, and was home soon.

Clarke strode out with his own mission. He blocked a few, but accelerated the run rate, taking the team to 2 more batting points with a good 32 not out, consisting of 5 fours and a six.

Meanwhile McDowell made his maiden 50 for the club. He'd got to 35 fairly steadily, but then had got stuck, and his last 20 runs all came in singles and twos. Unfortunately, he didn't get to carry his bat as he so deserved. Gone leg before in the third to last ball.

Skipper at 11 had to go out to face the last 2 balls of the innings to get the draw. Very nervous. Luckily they weren't challenging. First a simple block, and second a foot wide of off.

Good game Crows. Good team effort, everyone contributing.
