Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Crowthorne Saturday 2nd XI v Purley on Thames 3 on Sat 27 Jul 2013 at 1:30
Match was Drawn (Losing Draw)
Match report
With the weather forecast looking decidedly dodgy, the skipper walked out to the toss with two plans in mind against the league leaders, and both involved bowling first. Thankfully the toss was won and plan A was put into action: bowl Purley out cheap and knock off the runs.
Things were going to plan when Sidders took an excellent slip catch to get rid of the junior Denton for just 3, and Clarke soon followed him bowled by Saviour. Clarke (P) was bowling an excellent tight spell from the other end and when Denton Snr and Roach were picked off Purley were 4 down and plan A was on course.
Canny left armer Tim Leach was brought on to replace the captain, but he decided the swimming pool end was not for him and was swiftly replaced by an Avrili, who was tired of keeping already and had offloaded the gloves to the younger McDowell.
Purley's Nufail and Azad had by this point decided to try and hit everything as far as they can. Both could have been out on another day, with balls continuously falling into gaps, rising inches out of reach and occasionally slipping through hands.
Nufail finally failed, trying one hoik too many off middle stump and completely missing a straight one; whilst Azad was caught by Shaw off the bowling of Tim, who had found his rhythm from the B3430 end.
The wooly hatted Pahi carried on the streaky hitting of his team-mates, and by the time he was caught off Avrili's bowling (top-edging a hoik to fine leg) the damage was done. Purly declared on 237 and plan B would come into effect: bat for a draw until the rains came.
Leading from the front the skipper was sure of his and McDowell snr's ability to keep the Purley bowler's at bay until it chucked it down. Back went the captain first ball of the innings, bowled off an inside edge.
Dave obviously didn't get the memo about plan B, and started swatting the bowling araound the park before falling for 11. This brought McDowell the younger into the fray and he and his pop put on an excellent little partnership time-wise, punctuated with a couple of glorious flashing cuts for 4 from the veteran to keep the bowlers honest.
20 over ticked by so the game was on, and things were getting dark when the Purley men started picking off wickets at will. A shower finally fell, around 8 hours after forecasted, with Cook and Leach at the crease and Crows thought they had done enough, but the wet weather was short-lived and it had brightened up enough for the players to head back out and 2 more wickets to fall.
When the teams came off again some thought it was all over and called for the stumps to be pulled; but in no time at all the Purley men were back out eager to take one more wicket and keep their place at the table's summit, to some mumouring from the Crows balconey.
It was agreed between the skippers and umpire that it was a bit gloomy for the pace-men but they could have a go with the loopy-men. Pete Clarke and Sidders, down at number 11 with a hand injury, blocked with ease and would have batted all night if necessary. Rain started falling again; the teams looked at the skies Purley accepted they would have to shake hands on the draw.
