Stratfield Turgis & Hartley Wespall 2 v Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Crowthorne Saturday 2nd XI on Sat 22 Jun 2013 at 1:30
Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Lost by 6 wickets
Match report
Miserable morning weather in the Berkshire area meant some players were wondering whether we would get a game in at all, but the unique micro climate of Stratfield Turgis, or Hartley Wespall, or wherever on earth we were ensured a full game was played with even an occasional bit of sunshine.
Stratfield skipper Geddes, once of Woodley, won the toss and didn't hesitate in bowling. Crowthorne opened steadily with Stent and Nash building a platform by keeping their wickets intact in the face of tight swing bowling from another former Woodley stalwart 'One-size' Figzal and Craig Strudley.
Around half an hour in to the innings Tony McDowell decided to make an appearance after a tour of North Hampshire. After pulling in to an adjacent driveway, a long chat with Jimmy who had boundary rope in hand, and a bit of outfield manouvering mid-over, Tony was out on the road and into the correct entrance, and Crows were up to a full strength XI.
A short rain break ensued, seeing the pitch go from sticky to skiddy, and Stent fell to one that picked up pace of the pitch and on to the off stump. Crows' steady innings continued though with Ant Avrili picking up where Robin left off with a excellent controlled innings against a relentless Stratfield attack which, rather unsportingly, contained no wayward youngsters or ageing loopy-men; just continuous accurate seam and swing.
Nash nicked one behind and the skipper Sheppard continued recent form with a innings of all of one run. With around 10 to 15 overs to go it was time for Avrili and the lower order to pick up the pace; unfortunately the bowling was too good for his type of thinking and Crows were all out in the final over, with the 136 total as good as the opposition allowed. Avrili was the pick of the batsmen, playing with patience and intelligence whilst showing off some excellent stroke-play when the bowling allowed.
After an excellent tea, Crows opened up with Monty and the skipper looking for early wickets. Sheppard had the left handed opener Rogers LBW after repeatedly wrapping him on the pads, despite the batters protestations to his own umpire. Jones and Swankie also went in short order to the skippers swingers, but Downey and Dyson proved harder nuts to crack. The two Stratfied men were a class apart, pouncing on any loose deliveries on their way to 50s. Despite Jimmy catching Downey off Leach with the scores level, Crows were out-classed by the fired up but friendly Stratfield men who now boast to 8 wins from 8 games.
