Match report McDonagh hits sublime 86no with Crows 2nd XI recording a winning draw

Crows 2nd XI take a winning draw in their first ever match. McDonagh shines with the bat in his return to league cricket, hitting a 86 not out, equaling his personal best. Captain Sheppard had started the Crows off well with a 53, and Mike Chalmers hit a fast 34, setting 215 for 6. Unfortunately Emmbrook and Bearwood held on for 148 for 8 off their allotted overs.

History was made when skipper Sheppard stepped onto the Great Hollands hallowed square, steadied himself and faced the first ball ever for Crowthorne 2nd XI. A great moment for Crowthorne CC, after much work behind the scenes over the last year to get the team registered and ready.

Sheppard duly blocked the ball, and steadily steered himself to a half century. At 54 for 3, Savior was seeming an apt name, having scored over 60% of the runs, and seeing 3 partners come and go in the 15 overs. Crows had made a slow start, though there was time for some comedy with it.

Tony McDowell had stepped out with the skipper for the start, but was soon strolling back to the pavillion. No one knew what was going on, including the skipper. "What's up Tony?" ... "My pants are rubbing, I need to change them". Oh dear, batsman retired due to chaffing underwear ... could only happen for Crows 2nd XI.

Avrili went out as replacement, but unfortunately not lasting long due to a wild swing and a toe nick to be caught behind. So, as number 3 batsman, becoming the first wicket. Out returned Tony, with a spring in his step and fresh underwear. But he was soon back, via a wicked bowl round the back of his legs. Completely bemused, his spring had gone, but at least his pants were still fresh.

McDowell junior (Recardo) replaced his father, looked briefly good, slashed a boundary, didn't call for an underwear change, but got out too soon to trouble E+B too much.

Then came the change. McDonagh went out, slightly pensive, but cheered on by his family, he was determined. He slashed a 4, then called for a change of bat. This worked. The skipper fell, in came Chalmers, and the Crows settled. Over the next 13 overs, the batsmen turned the game fully in Crows favour, putting on a partnership of 88, McDonagh getting his 50 and Chalmers a great 34. Three sixes flew off the bat.

Sean O'Clarke, though maybe O'Clock would be more apparent due to his late arrival, stepped out to replace Chalmers after his leg before. Lasting 9 overs with some tight bowling, O'Clock hit a couple of 20 past the hours, but fell to a leg before with 2 overs left. New boy Payne went out, got a couple of quick singles and saw out the overs with McDonagh.

A great knock from McDonagh, 86 not out, top batting.

Tea was served, though Aran had forgotten all drinks, so no tea and coffee for the teams. Jimmy tweeting like a bird possessed, missed most of tea, though I'm sure it won't hurt him missing one meal.

Back out they went, Long given the new ball to take the first over. Having set 216 for E+B, there was a confidence. The batsmen started slow, and the bowling of Long and Miller was very tight. Only 2 runs off the first 4 overs. Then Miller made the break through, clean bowled the number 2, Crows jubilant, new black stumps smacked and pink bails flying.

Then butter fingered Crows McDonagh (twice) and Carson (a sitter that his chest couldn't hold onto) dropped the same batsman 3 times. But luckily that was his lives gone, and Miller gave up using his field and smashed the stumps again next ball.

In came Chalmers to replace Long, and Avrili to replace Miller. And Avrili soon had 2 wickets, an edge to keeper Sheppard, and a clean bowled golden next ball. Crows 2nd XI thought they were getting their first hat-trick and moved in, but sadly wasn't to be.

The batsmen hit out before Avrili took his third, a leg before. T McDowell was now at the other end and shortly took the sixth wicket, Miller showing his butter finger teammates how its done, with a catch on the run.

Crows heads were up, another 2 batsmen came and went, through leg befores to Long, and eight were down. But that was it. The last two stood their ground, with a lot of defensive play, they held out the 45 overs, to get 148 for 8.

Crows start with a winning draw, maximum batting points and almost maximum bowling. A good solid start, sets up a great season ahead.
