Sulhamstead & Ufton 2 v Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Crowthorne Saturday 1st XI on Sat 25 May 2013 at 1:30
Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Won by 4 wickets
Match report
Full score and report to follow. Crows made it 4 wns out of 4 with a hard-fought victory at S&U.
“On the fourth day of crick-mas my true gave to me, another away Crows victory”
So following days of torrential rain that would have dampened any chance of a game, the clouds cleared, the sun shone and a tree appeared in the middle of the outfield. With technical glitches and some nameless player attempting to play for the 2nd eleven, stand in skipper Partridge stepped forward onto the battlefield and lost the toss. The Crows were in the field.
Onto the lush and green outfield stepped the Crows and the opening pairing of Chalmers and Chalmers found controlling the aeroball slightly tricky. With the ball swinging like a politicians wife, both batsmen and bowlers finding it difficult to fulfil their respective tasks. However it was Ross at the dirt track end that struck first, LBW plum in front to a ball that found both required line and trajectory. Following shortly after the next wicket fell, with the batsman dumbstruck the ball hit him in front without an inch of movement and the rabbit in the headlight was sent back to the hutch. In came the wiley old man…..
A player of fine grace and balance, steadied the S&U ship, and despite good bowling a change was required. In came Terry “chucka” Charles. With only 1 ball bowled the calm and collected batsman proclaimed to the heavens that foul play was afoot. Throwing his hands aloft and proclaiming he could throw the ball harder and better, Crow legend Gary Hampshire calmly suggested that his opinion had been noted and that until the ECB and MCC had seen the video footage and past judgement, that proceedings should continue without any more toys being thrown.
For the next 30 overs the game ticked along. Crows unlucky with only rare glimmers of opportunity. The run rate not spectacular, and apart from a great bit of cricket from the Partridge seeing the lefty edged to Arshad at first slip, the innings was passing without further incidents. Shak taking a very sharp c&b and the returning Ross having Mughal caught by the sharp diving Barron.
A 199 with one over to go, an amazing over from Partridge saw Crows concede only 1 run and Barron swooped smartly for a run out. 200 to chase. May be a little under the par for the track
Following a hearty tea, the Cluett and Shak attack set to give the Crows a solid start, and they did not disappoint. Shak making short work of anything uh… short…. Crows raised to 19 off the first 12 balls…. A rapid start saw Crows 75 off the first 12 overs, with Cluett supporting the controlled aggressor Shak. However it was the latter that fell and in came the Crows own Nick “Jonty” Outram.
Despite the ball still moving sideways Cluett and Outram continued the fine start with runs being picked up in all areas around the wicker, however it was Cluett who fell next with the score at 121 off 25. The pads dusted and de-cobwebbed, Hampshire marched to the crease. Both Outram and Hampshire, were joined by Shah and Turbo in the pavilion with Crows now 151-6 off 36.
Barron at the crease, supported by Ross, formed a sensible partnership that saw the Crows accelerate to their total. With a few wields of his mighty willow, 8 off the over, then 16 off the next. Crows were close…. Then 22 off 2 overs…. Scores now tied with 6 balls to go, the duo dropped the ball and ran like Usain Bolt catching a bus. A direct hit! The ground silent. Square leg umpire Outram said Barron was safe. The game was won, and all that was left was for the aforementioned older S&U statesman to have one last throw of the toys before the physio arrived to give him his drugs.
The skipper was breathless. He’d managed to walk 17.4 miles and smoked 470 cigarettes in the process….
