Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Won by 196 runs

Match report Hartley Witney fold with hardly a whimper.
It's Davies 'the destroyer's day as Ozzie opener sends message to selectors over omission from Ashes squad.
Mackenzie masterminds maiden man management match and mullers men from Hants, by a massive margin.

New ground was resplendent in the sunshine, the clouds cleared as the players began to arrive, the pitch looked good as stand in Sunday skipper Mackenzie took control of his first ever game.

Eyeing the pitch, he tossed the coin. Flashing brightly in the sun it span, hitting the sun baked pitch, rolling an inch, before falling, head down, the toss was lost. Mackenzie mustered his jedi mind skills, and implanted the words "we'll have a bowl please" into the opposition skippers mind. Befuddled he mumbled the words, and walked away from the wicket, wondering what had happened.

The skipper sent Davies and O'Clarke out to open, and while young Joe blocked away at one end O'Clarke went to town on the bowlers, smashing sumptuous shots to the boundary, scattering fielders like skittles. Eventually however, the spinner appeared, and seano fell to his Achilles heel having scored 30 quickfire runs.

Will Avrili came to the crease, and while Joe continued to play the ones and twos, kept up Sean’s good work, keeping the fielders and scorers well occupied. He soon over took Davies' score, and got to his fifty effortlessly, before a lapse of concentration saw him back to the pavilion.

Ant Avrili came to the crease to take over the anchor duties, Davies started to open up as the bowlers wilted in the heat, his fifty came and went, as the boundaries started to flow. Controlling the strike he manoeuvred to the milestone in minutes. Jubilant scenes on the boundary and in the middle as the crowd applauded, and Davies celebrated exuberantly with Ant.
He was out soon after, generously giving his wicket away for the team ,getting himself out trying a scoop shot, but walked off to the deserved acclaim, after a masterful innings, paced to perfection, and a pleasure and privilege to witness.

With the score well over 200 leach strode to the crease, intent on plundering some runs before he ran out of overs, and after a single to play himself in, proceeded to smash a succession of sixes, and fours before getting out just before the end, leaving Huelin to grab the last run. Crows finished with a great total of 273 for 4.

After a hearty lunch the players returned to the field. With a healthy total on the board, the pressure was all on the opposition, and the skipper tossed the new ball to Leach and Partridge to open the bowling. Wickets followed soon after for both, Mackenzie taking a regulation catch off Leach at one end, while Partridge caused havoc at the other end, bowling a mixture of medium pace and spin. He was moving the ball both ways off the pitch, as well as swinging and flighting it in the air, to bamboozle batsman after batsman, finishing with 4 wickets, for not very many.

Mackenzie lost control of his team for a moment, as Sean O’Clarke decided it was his turn to bowl, taking Colin off himself, and had the ball in hand before the skipper really knew what had happened. Luckily O'Clarke bowled well, and Mackenzie regained his iron grip on the game in quick order.

The Skipper grew into his role, shuffling through his pack of bowlers like a las Vegas croupier, each change bringing a wicket, including one each from Carson Coles and Mackenzie himself, in very tidy spells, as his team, led superbly in the field by both Avrili’s kept the runs to a bare minimum. Eventually Ant came on to bowl, and took the final wicket with his first ball to wrap up the innings for a measly 70 odd.

The Crows took the victory, Davies and Will took the runs, Dan took the wickets, but the real winner in all of this, was the game of cricket itself.

Speaking to the reporters after the game, Mackenzie said: "the boys made my job so easy out there. A truly epic knock from young Joe Davies was the foundation upon which this victory was built, and what a great knock it was. but it was the play of the supporting cast that really impressed me, with everyone making a real contribution, with bat, ball and in the field."

Playing down rumours of a bid for the full time captaincy Mackenzie stated: " I've enjoyed my time in the role today, but I’m looking forward to playing again for the real skipper next week, free from the pressures and distractions of captaincy"
