Eversley v Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Crowthorne Sunday XI on Mon 06 May 2013 at 1:30
Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Lost by 66 runs
Match report
With Cranbourne crying off being unable to raise a team for the traditional Bank Holiday match at Windsor, Eversley were quick to accept the challenge of facing the unbeaten Crows Sunday team. Crows included debutants Tom Huelin and 12 year old Billy Coles in their ranks whilst Eversley thought that the Crows looked suitably formidable to deem it necessary to unveil their overseas international professional in the shape of Ceefax Zhuwoa.
The sun shone on Eversley Cross, the Frog and Wicket packed to the rafters and the beer garden was full in anticipation of the contest. The smell from the BBQ in the pub Car Park was overwhelming, which was just as well as Partridge had been on the pop all day Sunday and Leach was also reporting Ill-effects of Alcohol consumption.
Eversley batted first with a promise that Ceefax/Seabass would be used “sparingly”. Miller opened the bowling form the Duck-pond end and removed the large framed Sam Glaze in the very first over, finding the edge which was snaffled by skipper Hester behind the sticks
From the Yateley end, the new cherry was entrusted to the versatile Sheppard who was “on a mission” to take wickets. He too the wicket of the other opener, John Mission, trapping him leg before wicket and the Crows were in business. Miller continued to ply his trade from the Pond End and was further rewarded by sending the dangerous looking Utaths off-stump cart-wheeling towards the Yateley May Fair. It was reminiscent of the late and very great Malcolm Marshall playing on the very same ground for Hampshire 20 years previous.
With Miller tiring under the beating sun and Sheppard showing signs of fatigure from his Alec Stewart-esque keeping/Opening/skippering performance on Saturday as well as his long vigil at the Reading Beer Festival, Skipper Hester made 2 significant bowling changes. Jimmy “Anderson” Carson replaced Sheppard and young protégé Billy Coles replaced Miller. Carson bowled his best spell for the club taking the wickets of Hampshire youth player Kieran Thompson and Eversley Stalwart Robin Brooks, both comfortably caught by the ever-reliable hands of Sheppard at mid-on. Both batsmen tried in vain to break the shackles of Carson’s miserly bowling but both only managed to sky the ball into orbit only to realise the bespectacled Sheppard was waiting underneath to claim the catch.
At the other end, young Coles was belying his lack of age and experience by bowling a steady spell. Showing no nerves or apprehension he aquitted himself very well. Both Carson and Coles (sounds like a firm of Solicitors – No Claim too small) , however were to have their very tidy figures demolished by what happened next. With the fall of Brooks, Carson had unleashed hell with the arrival at the crease of Zimbabwe International Ceefax Zhuwoa. He had a shirt with the ironic lettering and numbering of “Big Bully 99”. He started in a pensive mood, almost falling to Carson in his first few balls. However it wasn’t long before he decided to give the gathered masses in the pub some entertainment and spent the next few overs demolishing the Crows attack. His favoured shot was the huge hit to Cow Corner, which he demonstrated on numerous occasions, including twice managing to despatch the ball into the pub garden. We think Leachy might still be over there looking for the ball.
With his score rapidly approaching 100, young Davies managed to get him to go off0side for once and he slightly mistimed one and MacKenzie took a world-class catch in the covers to send the Crows into raptures. Seabass had smashed 99 runs in about 8 overs and the Crows were delighted to see the back of him. At the other end, the ever-fortunate Partridge, fuelled by Peroni, decided it was best not to bowl at the pro, but to concentrate on the youthful tail. There was no answer to his slow straight deliveries and Eversley were bowled out well before the scheduled tea interval. Partridge managed the respectable figures of 5-3-5-4 having justified his pre-match ramble about “I always play better hungover”
Eversley were all out for 194 down largely to the onslaught from Ceefax. The impending tea caused great anticipation for the Crows, following on form last years offering. Carson was first up, halfway through his first plate before the rest of the team had made it to the pavilion. Crows very own “Tea Overlord” Mackenzie was next on the scene, armed with a camera, a notepad, social media logins and a cleansed palette. Despite the expectation, the tea was rated as only a 6.5 on the ISO Standard approved “MacKenzie Scale”. Perhaps the Millionaires shortbread and Jaffa Cakes didn’t make their way to that end of the room having been quarantined by Partridge, Carson and Davies for closer inspection at the top table.
With the sun staying in attendance for the whole match and the fizzy pop flowing at the Frog and Wicket, the Crows opening pair of Sheppard and Leach, strode purposefully to the crease. Sheppard fell to a good catch from Ceefax for 8, whilst The Leech set about the task in usual fashion despatching the Opening pair of Critchley and Sharp (more Solicitors??) to the deep midwicket boundary. In at first drop, was the buffet-riddled MacKenzie who looked confident and comfortable at the crease. His concentration (or lack of), so often the architect of many a premature departure, reared it’s ugly head once more as he meekly prodded one to point to fall for 12. Davies and Leach looked to be the main hope for the Crows to chase down the total but Davies fell plumb LBW given out by Umpire “Quick Draw” Carson for an unexpectedly low score of 4.
Debutants Heulin and Coles both avoided the dreaded “debut duck” but failed to trouble the scorers much after getting off the mark. This lead to Leach, still in search of the elusive 50, and Partridge at the crease as the chirp from the field got louder, more persistent and highly unfunny.
The 2 hungover southpaw’s got the scoreboard ticking over for a few overs to try to set up a late victory chase. Leach finally ran out of batteries and was bowled by Thompson Senior for a well crafted 35 whilst Partridge made 19 before being betrayed by some uneven bounce to be cleaned up by Joe Tucker, the latest protege from the Peter Daines Fast Bowling Clinic at Yateley Manor.
Crows hopes rested on the tail. Skipper Hester and Tom Nash had been dropped down the order to act as an insurance policy in case the wickets tumbled. Carson and Miller did a sterling job of delaying the inevitable with a 15 over partnership in which Carson defended resolutely for 10 whilst Miller nudged and nurdled the ball around for 31
The innings and the contest itself came to a bit of a damp ending with 7 overs remaining with Miller and Nash (Country and Western Duo?) both fell LBW to Thompson Junior.
Crows lost by 66 runs but it was a good game played in good spirits despite Eversley’s total being massively inflated by the destructive hitting of 1 man.
