Yateley Manor Staff v Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Crowthorne Midweek XI on Thu 28 Jun 2012 at 6:00
Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Won by 20 runs
Match report
A sun drenched Yateley Manor saw Crows continue their unbeaten T20 season.
Skipper O'Loughlin won the toss and elected to bat, which soon proved a good decision, and later an even wiser decision when Yateley opened their innings with the sun in their eyes.
Crows seemed to start well, setting the run rate quickly at 7 an over, but then J Cluett struck for Yateley and Joe was walking back to the pavilion, stumps completely destroyed.
Out went Glazier for his first innings since breaking his finger, and returning as a former pupil of the Manor. Unfortunately, he was soon walking back, having been clean bowled by M Cluett.
In came Leach, and he was soon walking back to the pavilion, only lasted about 9 balls. But his 9 were devastating to Yateley, hitting 3 sixes and 2 fours, The Leech was walking back as he was retiring having hit 28. A superb knock.
Will Avrili was holding up the other end, accumulating his runs well, and was soon walking back having retired on 30. Shah was now out, and putting on a performance for the selectors. Debuting for Crows, he hit a neat 25 and also retired.
Now practically 2 new batsmen at the crease, O'Loughlin and Brown, Yateley brought on their danger bowler, and he proved a good move, taking 4 wickets in his 3 over spell. He sent Brown back quickly, followed by O'Loughlin, and then Ant Avrili. Only adding a total of 13 between them, with O'Loughlin getting 11 of those.
In came a nervous Carson, who blocked the 3rd ball of a possible hat-trick for Martin. He then blocked a few more, and left a few, then Shaw pointed out we needed to get the retired batters back in, so Carson opened up.
Shaw soon was off back to the pavilion, and out came Knight, who sparkled in the sunlight. He hit a quick fire 25 before retiring to let Leach back in. Another 6 and another 4 quickly from Leach before he became M Cluett's second wicket with only 2 balls of the innings left.
Will came back out, and hit a quick single. Leaving Carson to take the last ball of the innings. He'd meanwhile taken his total slowly up to 16. In came 2 wicket M Cluett, and Carson launched him over the boundary, and to Carson's personal best of 22. Crows finished on 192, a seemingly huge score.
A lovely spread of sandwiches and cakes was laid on at the break. Then back out for the Manor innings.
The sun was now in a perfect postion, right behind the arm of the bowler, and in came Jules at great pace. The batsmen struggled to get a bat on it, and Jules skittled 2 in the first over. Continuing into his second over, he got great figures of 2-0-4-2. Very tight.
Brown opened at the other end, and though struggling with the sun, he finally got his line and took the Yateley 3rd wicket with the first ball they hit off the strip, straight to Ant Avrili.
Change of bowling came with Yateley well and truly on the ropes, but then Yateley had the dangerous Cluett brothers, Ant and Mike, in the middle, and they put a good partnership on to drag Yateley back into it. Crows struggled. Ant Avrili was eccomical with figures of 2-0-9-0 but couldn't get a wicket with his balls out of the sun.
Glazier had one over before resting to come in again at the end. And on came Shah, for his first overs for the club. He bowled well, only going for 2 off the first, but then took a wicket in his second over, that of P Daines. However this wicket proved to be nasty for Will, with the bail flying up through his visor and hitting him just below the eye. A nice shinner for his graduation photos tomorrow.
Meanwhile Davies had come on at the other end and taken the important wicket of M Cluett, followed in his second over with K Cluett, the father of the Cluett brothers.
Leach and Carson came on, and bowled fairly well. Carson's comical fielding costing a few runs for Leach. But Yateley had kept the score ticking and were now in with a shot. With 60 needed of 24 balls, and 2 Cluett's ready to come back into bat, Crows got a little tight.
Knight came in and continued to sparkle, this time with the ball. Taking 2 wickets in his first over, he soon made it very difficult for Yateley. Then in his 2nd and the final over, Yateley needed 30, but Sparkle went for singles of his first 2 balls and put it out of Yateley's reach.
Yateley totalled 172, but that was 20 short, and Crows won the match.
Notable performances from 5 batsmen, Leach first, then Will, Aniket and Sparkle all retiring, and Jimmy hitting 22. With the ball, Jules, Joe and Mark took 2 a piece with tight bowling. And in the field Aniket was fast on his toes, taking a quick run out, and deserved of more.
BIG THANKS to Monty for doing the scoring for us.
Debuts: A Shah
Ducks: K Glazier
Baggy Greens: n/a
6s: T Leach - 4, W Avrili - 2, A Shah - 1, J Carson - 1, M Knight -1
First Wicket for Club - A Shah
Captain - Julian O'Loughlin
Wicketkeeper - Will Avrili
MOM: Tough call, Will (31), Shah (25) and Mark (25) also retiring, Jimmy's knock of 22, Jules 2-0-4-2, Shah's first wicket and a run out, all good. However, I think man of the match goes to Tim with his quick fire 39, including 3 fours and 4 huge sixes. Great knock Tim.
