Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Crowthorne Saturday 1st XI v Grosvenor BCS 2 on Sat 01 Sep 2012 at 1:00
Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Won by 176 runs
Match report
At Crows HQ, on the last day of the season the sun was shining, the birds were singing and the Saturday Crows were desperate to get a last game on the hallowed turf before the winter break. Having demolished BCS away, earlier in the season, the Crows were hoping for a similar result, but a very different game.
BCS arrived and the skipper confirmed that they had only 9 men, following 2 last minute drop outs. Skipper Knight won the toss (thanks to his Olympic lucky coin) and the Crows were in to bat.
Ant Cluett and Knight opened the batting and the latter was finding easy runs using a tickle to third man (again, again and again). Ant was steady and watchful, putting bad balls to the boundary and the score was “tickling” along nicely. Knight scored his first 6 of the season with a massive leading edge, however fell to the deadliest of straight full tosses 2 overs later. The score at 42 in under 10 overs, and local celebrity Ricky McDowell arrived at the crease.
Ricky immediately found runs easy to come by, nudging into the gaps and taking the quick singles. Ant and Ricky were finding boundaries easy to come by with the fielders tiring. As the partnership looked to be building, Ricky was trapped in front by Butt, and Smokin’ Joe was in.
Joe stamped his authority immediately, crashing several boundaries from short balls outside off stumped. AClu continued to punish the bad stuff, and for the umpteenth time this season, made another half century. The casual flick of the hand acknowledgement was given to the sideliners, much to their delight.
The Crows continued to press home the advantage of the gaps in the field with sensible batting, however it wasn’t long before AClu was trapped in front, bringing the curtain down on his record breaking league season.
JClu came to the crease looking to have a good bat and push the Crows to a winning total with the score at 114. It wasn’t long before the boys in the middle accelerated the run rate, with Joe seeming to score a single of every ball for 20 runs and Jeff taking advantage of some poor bowling.
Joe reached a well deserved half century and celebrated by sticking the next ball for maximum just behind square leg. Jeff joined Joe on a half century also, and also opened up the shoulders with some big hits.
Both players now on 80 but with only 6 overs remaining in the innings. Joe despatched one to the boundary, however the deadly full toss reared it’s head again and he middled it straight to midwicket. The partnership with Jeff ending on 171, a club and league record. A great knock for the young Aussie and a reflection of his excellent performances this year.
Seano Clarke joined Jeff at the crease, for his first Saturday knock of the season, and promptly despatched his first ball to the boundary for 4. The big man gave the strike to Jaffa as often as possible and Jeff required 16 from the final over to make it to his century. Having mis-timed his drive, Jeff was no longer on strike and Seano swung high and the skier was held by BCS.
The last minute call-up, Big Bear Phil Brown, came to the crease and nudged a comfortable single to give Jeff the strike, however Jaffa could not find the required runs to make it to the landmark that he deserved. A formidable 304-5 was on the board and tea was enjoyed by all.
The double act of Chalmers and Chalmers opened the bowling session, and the Crows feared a long afternoon’s work as 5 overs went by without a run being scored. Both bowlers bowling good lines, however the BCS batsmen were not interested in playing anything outside the stumps.
It was Mike who made the first breakthrough. With the score barely into double figures, the deadliest full toss of the day was smashed back at Mike who took the catch and around shoulder high. Was only a fair result for an opening spell of pace and intent.
Not to be outdone, Ross teased the other opener into a wild drive that was picked off by Turbo in extra cover. The most dangerous bowler in the league produced another peach of a delivery to the number 4 batsman second ball, however with a genuine edge, Knight at second slip couldn’t hold onto the ball and (not for the first time) hung his head in shame. It was to be a costly error.
The number 4 bat proceeded in going aerial and scored runs at a quick pace, as half chances came and went. It was Dan who got the call up, to replace Ross from the pavilion end and Turbo Terry was brought into the attack from the kilometre end.
It was Turbo that made the breakthrough, taking the edge off the bat and Phil Brown taking a comfortable catch behind the stumps. Partridge responded with a “walking wicket”. The batsman not standing on ceremony and flailing the bat at every ball, and not connecting. After strike 4 the ball hit the wicket and he was back in the hutch.
Drinks came and Phil Brown handed over the gloves to Ant Cluett. Phil had put in a sterling performance behind the stumps.
Within moments of taking the gloves, Terry enticed the 3rd bat into a wild swipe, that clipped the toe guard and Ant took a comfortable catch. The skipper was relieved, however expensive mistake to drop the batsman on 0.
A bit of déjà vu occurred as again the new bat swiped at a ball from Terry and AClu took another comfortable catch. It wasn’t long before Terry struck again, this time clean bowling the batsman.
Crows wrapped up the innings as the final batsman looked to take a quick single to short fine leg. The skipper somehow managed to throw the ball in the vicinity of the stumps where AClu took the bails off.
Special thanks to Phil Brown who jumped in at the last minute and to Sean Clarke for making himself available when we were short. Both put in excellent performances.
Another fantastic display and performance by all concerned to round off an excellent season. Well done to Jeff and Joe for making club history, and also to Ant and Terry for their individual efforts on the day.
Crows finished a close 3rd in the league behind Welford and WSL. Had the top 2 played each other the same week the Crows were due to play Mortimer West End 2, the league table may have read differently.
A massive THANK YOU to all the 22 players that have contributed so much this season. Records have tumbled, a massive amount of runs have been scored, wickets taken and catches held (skipper excluded). The season has been a success and the club is heading in the right direction to build on that success.
Finally a massive THANK YOU to Alan Brown for umpiring this year. Alan has umpired in almost every game this year, making him the clubs leading point scorer! His help is always appreciated by the skipper and team alike.
Look forward to seeing what the 2013 season brings!
