Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Crowthorne Saturday 1st XI v Emmbrook & Bearwood on Sat 18 Aug 2012 at 1:00
Match was Drawn (Winning Draw)
Match report
On the hottest day of the year, and with the 1pm starts kicking into full swing, the Emmbrook side arrived at Crows HQ for a 3rd/4th clash. Pre-match conservations from both sides turned to the sides’ experiences of Welford Park during the course of the season.
After some jolly banter, the skippers made their way to the middle and using his new lucky Olympic 50 pence piece, the skipper finally won a toss and the Crows were to have a bat.
On a flat wicket with a very short boundary on one side this looked like a real batfest and Barron and AClu soon got the scoreboard ticking over. Both batsmen were finding good runs, however the early seam and swing movement had meant both picking up runs through the slip region. Barron blasted a trademark cover drive, however played all the way round a straight one and his middle stump was out of the ground. The score at 30, saw Smokin Joe join AC at the crease to what was to be another fine partnership.
Both players were having good battles with the opposition bowling, but the partnership continued to stand firm. The occupation at the crease, mixed with the number of shots sent to the longest boundary, only to trickle over the line with a fielder fast approaching, was taking it’s toll on E&B.
The slinger from one end was getting little joy and with E&B’s usual opener injured, the first change was finding it difficult to make to break the partnership up. Even the wicketkeeper was given a bowl and proved to be their leading wicket taker.
The drinks break came and went, with Joe dripping from top to bottom and AC looking like he’d only just got out of bed. With the score just over 100, AC brought up his fifty and there was much joyous celebration (especially from Jeff).
Both batsmen continued to put the screw on the opposition, scoring runs all round the pitch. Ant smashing anything short and Smokey letting his cover drives loose. With the partnership just over 100, Smokey nicked one behind on 46. A top knock that was deserving of a half century. Joe got to the pavilion and melted.
Ricky “Tinnie Tempah” McDowell, joined AC at the crease and kept the scoreboard ticking with singles and boundaries. AC was beginning to sweat as the run rate began to accelerate. Ricky was going for his shots now and boundaries with powerful backfoot drives. Unfortunately he mis-timed one, sent it skywards, where a good scrambling catch was made. Ricky returned to the pavilion, where he could “pass out” having scored 20.
With the score at 150 with just under 10 overs left, the boys knew they had to get a move on. AC smashed a succession of boundaries before a high top edge carried to third man. Ant was on 90, and yet another great performance from the run-machine.
In came JC to help Avrili push Crows on. Jeff’s innings didn’t last long as he was skittled by the straight one having only picked up 1 run. Chalmers was sent in to best use the short boundary, unfortunately getting his bearings a little wrong and was returned to the pavilion bowled for 2.
Avrili at the other end was showing his class and current good form with some lovely bat play and fast running between the wickets. The sun was really taking it out of E&B and the singles were sapping them of their energy.
With Turbo Terry at the other end, there was some hard hitting and fast running between the wickets. Then came the moment of contention. With a quick 2, Terry was pushed to make it in time following some good fielding. Barron doing the honours at square leg said not out and cue the E&B player losing the plot. Bazza rightly left the pitch to allow the game to continue.
Avrili continued to blast away, however with only 3 overs remaining, his stumps were removed for a quickfire 22. The skipper came in and Terry continued to smash more runs. Again, the Terry misjudged one and was bowled for a valuable 17.
Jouanides came in, hit a single for hit first ball, and watched the skipper pad up the last ball of the innings (don’t ask)...... Cue more finger pointing and shouting as the skipper proceeded in making it clear that this is not the behaviour that can be tolerated. The dust settled, tea was eaten and the Crows had a good 236 to protect.
The Crows opened with Dan and Jeff with the old ball. Both were keeping it tight, but finding little joy in making a breakthrough. The first few overs passed and the new ball was called. Chalmers from the road end found good movement, but it was Jaffa from the pavilion end that made the breakthrough. The away movement tempted the opener into a drive which Partridge at gully nabbed with his signature move of the salmon dive.
The next few overs, the Crows continued to toil. The E&B batsmen digging in and despite bowling good lines, Ross was replaced with Turbo Terry. Despite the square leg umpire calling no-ball for Terry’s unorthodox action, the Crows made the breakthrough (cue subsequent loud mumblings from the sidelines about the Crows “chucker”). The opener finding a genuine edge that was spectacularly nabbed low to Will’s right hand side.
It wasn’t long before the new bat was sent packing as well, as Turbo Terry turned up the heat. This time skittling the stumps and bails far and wide. At the other end, Jouanides was brought into the attack to replace the ever ready Jaffa. Having struggled to find his rhythm for a few overs, Luke kicked into life. First dismissing the E&B skipper, bowled through the gate, then having been hit for a few runs from the E&B big hitter, Jouanides found the inside edge and he was back in the hutch.
With Terry tiring and less than 10 overs left, Ross was brought back into the attack. However it was Jouanides who struck again. Having a ball smashed back past him, Lukey stuck out a hand and the ball stuck. Amazing catch, but Crows could smell blood but there was still work to do.
Having bowled very well, Lukey finished his spell with an over head height warning and was replaced by Partridge. Partridge struck immediately, dislodging the dangerous number 3, when he failed to move his feet and was hit dead in front. There was still time to win, but only 8 overs left.
Jaffa came back into the fold and bowled the E&B number 8 and then Partridge lured the new bat into an attempted lofted moo, that was safely caught by Turbo in the covers. 6 overs remained, 1 wicket to get.
On his first ball, a mix up between the batsmen left one stranded as AC hit the stump and the ball broke loose. Skipper tried to fire the ball in to the stranded bowlers end but his accuracy was out, leaving Jaffa too much to do. Partridge got the bat to push at one that looped into gully, but was just too far in front of Lukey.
Crows continued to try everything to dislodge one of the batsman, but couldn’t find the breakthrough. Davies brought into attack to out guile the wily campaigners, and Partridge rattled the pads in the last over, only to be turned down by Alan.
A great game of cricket, very slightly marred by a couple of little incidents, however yet again Crows cleared the 200 mark with the bat and so very nearly bowled out a team packed full of batsmen. This was expected to be a tough game and so it proved, however yet again the Crows did themselves proud and for a little luck, would have claimed all the points.
Thanks to Monty, Hester and Jimmy for their help in clearing up.
All that was left was for the players and supporters to go for a curry and a bit of light hearted down time. It was quickly established that Ricky and Monty were separated at birth, curries do not contain runner beans and Jaeger-bombs do not mix well with the Avrili’s.
You can go hard, or you can go home - the skipper had gone home......
