Grosvenor BCS 2 v Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Crowthorne Saturday 1st XI on Sat 30 Jun 2012 at 1:30
Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Won by 8 wickets
Match report
Crows arrived at BCS confident of back to back victories as the season reached it's halfway stage. On arrival the pitch was looking very grassy and unrolled, which would have been perfect for pitching a tent and joining in on the annual BCS hockey fest.
The skipper subsequently lost the toss and BCS decided to bat. With Jules O'Loughlin deciding he would like to bowl from the same end as Ross Chalmers, Jeff Cluett was given the cherry bowling up the hill, into the wind.
Chalmers started from the pitched tent end and with the game barely started, the hockey "comedians" began with pictch invading and high 5s all round. Undeterred a couple of good LBW shouts, Chalmers finally pinned the BCS opening bat in front with just 10 on the board. Not to be outdone, Jeff's tight lines were rewarded as the number 3 bat got a top edge for Knight to nab, with the use of his cleavage.
Bring about the hockey "comedians" next stunt of dressing as a cricketer and standing on the pitch. Not only were the BCS batsmen finding this a distraction, however the BCS umpire was positively losing the plot and produced one of the quotes of the day "get off the pitch you dozy tart", before storming to the organisers tent to remonstrate.
With the Crows well in the ascendancy, the dangerous number 4 bat was sent packing following a tight over from Chalmers with the score on 31. Jeff's response was to entice an edge that was taken at full stretch by the impressive Avrili behind the timbers. What followed was both bowlers racing to the 5 wicket mark as the Crows continued to turn the screw.
Chalmers took another wicket (following another one of the captains stupid - and costly bets) getting the number 5 bat plum in front. Having had enough of his rant to the organisers, the BCS umpire decided to bend of the rules. Asking Alan whether a ball should have been classed as too high having hit the batsmen on the shin without pitching. Confused Crows. BCS umpire was barking mad....
Still JC and Judith turned to screw and by the time Jeff took a comfortable caught and bowled, and then Ant Cluett taking a diving catch, the writing was on the wall as both bowlers polished BCS off with the minimum of fuss. Both bowlers finished with 5 wickets a piece, with the last 8 wickets falling for 3 runs.
The Crows needed 35 to win from 74 overs to obtain victory.
Mickey and Ant opened the Crows batting positively. Having looked confident at the crease, Gopie fell in the third over as a his off stump was left exposed. Avrili was sent in at number 3 following a good looking bat at the T20 earlier in the week. However, with a loose and short ball outside off stump Will nicked it behind on his first ball. Thankfully his brother wasn't there to see it!
Out strode Smokin Joe to join Ant and from the moment Joe despatched 2 fours in as many balls, the end was nigh for BCS. With both players giving no glimmer of an opportunity BCS began to capitulate as a quick single turned into 3 runs with not 1, but 2 overthrows! Ant brought the total in sight with a delicious cover drive for 4 and wrapped up the innings with a guided double down to third man.
All that was left was to decide how the Crows would spend the rest of their day, having finished in a touch over 2 hours.
Cue an early tea, jugs of beer, hockey "women" using the mens showers and Jimmy stating "I'm a pervert, but not THAT much of a pervert" it was an altogether successful day.
Apologies to all those who weren't given the opportunity to do much during the game, however the Crows keep marching on. Jeff and Chalmers make the headlines, but Ant and Joe showed real maturity and calm to guide the Crows to the winning runs.
Next up - MWE 2 at the home of cricket in 2 weeks time! On this performance, Crows can surely be confident of another victory.
