Match report
Crowthorne Spirits Dampened As Emmbrook Rain Down
On a bright but overcast day, with the small outfield still sodden in patches, the skipper won the toss and decided to field.
Early pressure took its toll on the Emmbrook top order as Chalmers dislodged the opening bat following a fine full stretch forward diving catch from Luke in the covers. M’s was rewarded for his early pace and accuracy with an LBW, and 2 balls removed the number 3 with a cracking delivery. With Emmbrook 15-3, the Crows were well on top. As the middle order was trying to steady the ship Crowthorne continued to amass pressure and it wasn’t until the 9th over of the match that the first boundary was scored (although the Emmbrook batsmen did run 3 when Luke’s attempt to return to ball on a single was thrown 20 yards and 120 degrees in the wrong direction.
Feeling the slow run rate, the Emmbrook batsmen decided to “go aerial” and opportunities came and went as balls failed to go to hand, or if they did, the chances were downed.
Crowthorne continued in dogged fashion and with Luke and Danny finding little joy in their efforts to get on top of the free flowing bats, Ant C was hit for a few, however managed to dislodged the larger bat LBW ending the 150+ partnership. Jeff C came into the attack and forced the other batsmen into playing on. Now E&B were 170 for 5, Crow’s found new energy. Jeff, Chalmers and Patel finishing off the innings with 2 overs to spare.
Following a good tea, Saviour and A Cluett soon settled into a stride with some exquisite shot making (including a velvety cover drive from Saviour). As the runs were ticking over at a good rate, Saviour popped one to point and a slow motion diving sequence soon saw the Crows man back in the hutch. “Smoking Joe” was next up and showed maturity in picking his shots as the total raced to 50-1 off just 9 overs. As the run’s ticked over, the dark clouds began to gather overhead. Joe was unfortunate to knick one behind, and before long all players were in the pavilion as the rain fell.
After 15 minutes delay, and still feeling confident that Crows could build from their solid start the team watched as the batting line up was washed away as quickly as the grey rainclouds disappeared. Ant went shortly after the resumption, Ricky followed soon after and Jeff was bowled a peach as Crows collapsed to 65-5. Veteran Gopie and Knight managed to see off the opening bowlers and help the team through to drinks, however the skipper fell shortly afterwards and Gopie had one keep low. The writing was on the wall and the Crows stumbled to just 94 all out.
Despite the result, some positives can be taken in that the team collectively continued to work hard in the field and never gave up. A majority of the batsmen looked in good form, on another day the batsmen would convert good starts into good scores. BUT, an area of improvement is fielding practise. That counts for the skipper as much as anyone!
Next week, Woodley 2 @ Woodley. Hoping for a response from the team for this week’s disappointment.
