Match report
Crows lose out in close match against Whitchurch...
...The weather was miserable, it felt like we were up in the clouds. The weather monitoring station at chez Jimmy Mallet was working overtime. But a game was managed on a damp soggy wicket. Whitchurch won the toss, and decided to bowl. Shilts wondered if they were ever going to get started as the Whitchurch skipper spent what seemed like an hour or so telling him his tale of woe on their Isle of Wight Tour.
Debutant* Dave Shaw went out to open the batting with Tom Nash. The home side were left disappointed as Dave avoided a duck, but was then run out in a bit of a mix up with 3 overs gone. Skipper Shilts then came into bat, and as always took a while to get going. He and Tom put on a good partnership before 'Billy Bowden' Mackenzie decided to give most of his team out LBW. The skipper was left a bit dazed when drinks came, as he was still in the middle, not quite sure how to carry on from there. Seano came in, but got out trying to play some shots, before Shilts and Colin put on a good partnership. Shilts got a bit bogged down whilst on 32, hitting several good shots that all went to fielders. The frustration took it's toll, and trying to hit over the top he dollyed one to mid off. It was none the less a pleasing innings for the skipper, and a personal best. Even if it was painfully slow with a strike rate below 50. The rest of the team put some runs on the board, and a total of 153 was posted. It seemed defendable, but may be a little short.
The Crows bowled well, and got some good early breakthroughs. Tim Leach getting the wicket of their overseas player, with a stunning piece of fielding (juggling) from Seano who took an excellent catch. More breakthroughs came with good bowling from Matt Childs and Colin Ingram, but the wet conditions made it hard work for the bowlers to get any purchase. Whitchurch started to ease towards the total and in the end got there with 11 balls to spare. It left the Crows with a lot of what ifs...what if we'd been given those LBWs or stumpings that were plum? What if Shilts had got on with it when batting? And what if Brendy knew the LBW laws?
All in all it was a good afternoon of cricket, played in the right spirit. The opposition were, a little weird, but friendly enough and we look forward to playing them again next season. Thankfully we all got out of the Waterloo in time before the ritual sacrifice of one of the locals began. There were some great moments, Seano's catch and Monty getting his comedy injury for the year with a ball to the head.
There were notable performances from Tom Nash with the bat, and Colin Ingram contributed with both bat and ball. Man of the match goes to the skipper (if I may say so myself), for an innings that anchored the match and his personal best score of 32. May be a while before that is repeated!
* May not have been his debut, no one can really remember!
