We were seldom at our best on Saturdays and it was a weakish side we took down to Basingstoke for our first visit to Hampshire's northern outpost. Jim Wheatley was a reluctant number 2 batsman, but produced a steady innings to mask our lack of regular openers and when the 50 went up with only one wicket down we had cause to be pleased. But although several batsmen made it into double figures, no one stayed in long enough to enable us to get a grip on the game. Indeed, when the ninth wicket fell at 119 the outlook was bleak and significance of the ensuing partnership of 20 for the final wicket between John Louth and Matt Blackmore was yet to become apparent. Mick Ruggles and Dave Needham got us off to a flying start when Basingstoke batted and at 24 for 3 the home side were struggling. But a partnership of 53 between Cozens and Freeman threatened to put the game out of our reach until Freeman underestimated the pace at which Chris Morgan could throw and was well run out. Matt Blackmore and Steve Brett also got among the wickets, but with one wicket left the home team were only a single run in arrears. Mick Ruggles, who already had 3 wickets to his name, returned to bowl the final over and ended resistance with his first delivery.
